Memorial services for Hilda Marie Blaker Mitchell, 94, of Lufkin will be held Sunday, July 23, 2017 at 2:30 p.m. at Christ Congregational Church with The Reverend Randall K. Green officiating. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Carroway Funeral Home.
Hilda Marie Blaker Mitchell was born September 30, 1922 in Cumberland, Maryland. She was one of seven children born to Ethel Rosanna (Twigg) and Sherman Washington Blaker. She passed on to her heavenly home Monday, July 10, 2017.
Hilda attended nursing school in Baltimore at Maryland General Hospital, where she was President of her class and received her R.N. in Nursing. It was there that she met and fell in love with William Arthur Mitchell, M.D. They married May 6, 1944. Eventually, Hilda and Bill moved to Lufkin in 1952 and raised three children, Hilda Marie, Robert Levis III, and Nancy Blaker.
During her lifetime as beloved wife, mother, and sister, Hilda served in many various state, civic, and community organizations. An avid volunteer and leader, she was always involved in the Lufkin Service League, now known as the Junior League of Lufkin, and served as President in 1960, 1961, and 1962.
She was a current active member of the Lufkin Historical Society and always looked forward to attending the monthly meetings. She was involved with the Angelina Medical Auxiliary for many years. Hilda also served on the Board of the Texas Lung Association for many years. Currently, she served on the Board of the Margarite Fairchild Foundation, which supports the Fine Arts of the University of Texas, and was its Vice-President at one time.
Hilda enjoyed the game of golf, and was quite a serious competitor. Through the years she was a member and served on the Boards of the Ladies Golf Associations at Lufkin Country Club and Crown Colony, as well as the Texas Senior Women’s Golf Association. She was even blessed to make a hole-in-one three times, all at Crown Colony Country Club.
She will miss her many friends she played golf and bridge with, and especially the Thursday “Hollywood Gin” gang.
“Gran” adored her grandchildren and followed their sports activities, recitals, graduations, and weddings, attending as many as possible.
Hilda was preceded in death by her husband, William A. Mitchell, M.D.; daughter, Hilda Marie; parents; and six sisters.
She is survived by her son, Robert Levis Mitchell III, DDS, wife Gail, and grandsons, Samuel and Andrew; daughter, Nancy Meyers, husband Alan, granddaughters, Meredith Moffett and husband Wes, Courtney Lyon and husband Justin, and grandson, Mitchell Meyers. She is also survived by two great-granddaughters, Phoebe “PJ” and Jovi Lyon, whom she will be lovingly remembered by as “Gran-Gran”.
The family would like to thank the entire staff of Hospice in the Pines and the many caregivers of Visiting Angels, especially Donna Knight, for their love and support.
