A Celebration of Life for Gibson Peavy “Gip” Friesen, 75, of Lufkin will be held Thursday, October 16, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary at First United Methodist Church of Lufkin, at 805 E. Denman Avenue.
Gip passed peacefully into the arms of the Lord on September 30, 2025, surrounded by his family. Gip’s love for his family, friends, and community defined his life. His presence brought comfort and strength, and his legacy will live on in all who knew him.
Born on March 17, 1950 in Lufkin, Texas to Dora Jane Peavy and Lee Walter Friesen, Sr., Gip’s life was deeply shaped by his small-town roots. After graduating from Lufkin High School in 1968, he earned a B.A. in Business Administration from Texas Christian University. Following graduation, he served six years in the Texas Air National Guard during the Vietnam era. Upon returning to Lufkin, he met Andrea, the love of his life, and together they shared 46 years of marriage. As a husband, he honored their bond as his proudest commitment. As a father, he delighted in raising their three daughters—Leeanne, Laura, and Lacey—filling their childhood with laughter and encouragement, never missing a chance to remind them how deeply cherished they were.
Gip found his calling in the insurance field and co-founded Friesen-Strain Insurance Associates, building a career that spanned more than 40 years. He was also a partner in Denman-Friesen Oil and pursued other ventures, guided by his entrepreneurial spirit and his desire to create opportunities for his family and to give back to his community.
Faith was the cornerstone of Gip’s life. Having read his Bible from cover to cover many times, he lived out his beliefs daily. A lifelong member of First United Methodist Church of Lufkin, he served faithfully as a Sunday School teacher, weekly usher, and dedicated supporter of the church’s growth and ministry.
Gip’s dedication extended far beyond the church. He served on the Board of Memorial Health System of East Texas for 11 years, including terms as Secretary, 2nd Vice Chair, and 1st Vice Chair. A champion for children and his community, Gip also served on the Angelina County Child Welfare Board, the Lufkin ISD School Board, and the United Way of Angelina County Board.
His happiest moments were often found outdoors—fly fishing, bird watching, hunting with his travel group, or golfing with friends. A devoted Horned Frog fan, he never missed a game. He also treasured life’s simple pleasures: watching sunsets, taking evening rides to Boggy Slough, sharing stories that filled the room with laughter, and finding peace in the beauty of nature.
In his later years, he found immense joy in being “Gipper” to his nine grandchildren. Whether watching them play sports, dance on stage, sharing his love of the outdoors, or simply spending time together, he treasured every moment. Gip also cherished time with his extended family, celebrating holidays and special moments with his brothers and the large, close-knit Friesen family.
Gip is survived by his wife, Andrea; daughters, Leeanne Haglund and husband Hunter of Lufkin, Laura Fincher of Fort Worth, and Lacey Luce and husband Chase of Lufkin; grandchildren, Preston, William, Hannah, Patrick, Gibson, Walter, Griffin, Emma Jane, and Watson; brother, Lee Friesen and wife Cathey; brother Phillip Friesen and wife Rona; sister-in-law, Juree Carrifee and husband Blane; and brother-in-law, Dennis Watts and wife Laurie. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and treasured friends.
Gip was preceded in death by his parents, Dora Jane Peavy and Lee Walter Friesen, Sr., and his son-in-law, Thomas Fincher.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all who offered support during Gip’s final days. Special thanks are given to Dr. Vivek Mangla, Dr. Michael H. Huber, Dr. Pramod Pinnamaneni, Dr. Sid Roberts, Dr. Taylor McKewen, Mary King and Hospice in the Pines of Lufkin for their compassionate care.
