Interment will follow in Huntington Oddfellows Cemetery.

Mrs. Spears was born December 24, 1934 in St. Martinville, Louisiana, to the late Asparize (Boudreaux) and Ozaire Joseph Barras, and died Sunday, August 30, 2026 at her residence.

Gerline Spears played a significant role in the lives of many people. Some called her Mimi, Gigi, Aunt, or Sister, but above all, she was the beloved wife of her “darling” husband, Sonny. Being his wife was a role she cherished deeply. The two were inseparable. They hunted, fished, and gardened together, and they served the Lord side by side. These were more than activities they enjoyed - they were a part of the life they built together.

Gerline often reminded younger wives to take care of their husbands. “Do something sweet for them or cook their favorite meal,” she would say. Even in the final hours of her life, she referred to her husband as her “darling”.

Gerline's love for the Lord was woven into every part of her life. She had a special love for missionaries, Texas Bible College students, and her pastors and their wives. She valued those relationships deeply and considered it an honor to love, encourage, and support them. Gerline loved her friends and church family. When friends visited her home, she would insist that they leave with something - even if it was her favorite mini candy bar. She had a special group of friends who called each other every day. These ladies were a rare treasure in this busy world of ours.

As a Sunday School teacher, Gerline faithfully pointed children toward God. She taught them that our true strength comes from the Lord. Even after retiring from teaching, she continued to minister in her own special way. She kept peppermint candies and Hershey’s Kisses in her pockets, always ready to share with the children - and even a few adults. Giving was simply part of who she was.

During the last three years of her life, Gerline faced some health challenges. Her daughter, Kathie, moved from Virginia to be by her mother’s side. It took time for Gerline to let go of her independence, but once she did, she made sure everyone knew just how much her daughter meant to her. Their relationship was a gift and remained precious until the very end.

Survivors include her daughter, Kathie Treadway Spears of Huntington; grandchildren, Chelsee Jones, Kalyn Torres and husband Joseph, and Nicolle Moore and husband Paul; grandson, Lathan Treadway of Liberty; and great-grandsons, Gunnarr Treadway and Lathan Treadway, Jr., both of Liberty.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Elmer V. “Sonny” Spears.
