Funeral services for Gerald Lee Glover, 90, of Lufkin will be held Saturday, May 2, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Denman Avenue Baptist Church with Dr. Jacob Fitzgerald and Bro. Charles Roberts officiating. Interment will follow in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park.
Mr. Glover was born October 18, 1935, in Hemphill, Texas to the late Maudie Pamela (Seale) and Walter Lee Glover, and died Thursday, April 23, 2026 in a Longview hospital.
He graduated high school at the age of 16 and started working for Texas Telephone & Telegraph in Fairfield, Texas. He began his career in 1956 with Lufkin Telephone Exchange, starting in construction and working his way to management. In 1955, he met the love of his life, Johnnie Johnson in Newton, TX. While he was working on a telephone pole, he lost his work hat due to a strong wind. He stopped at the Passmore’s Dry Goods Store where she worked, and she sold him a “farmer’s” straw hat. They married on June 18, 1955. Mr. Glover served on many State Telephone Committees throughout his career. He was instrumental in the beginning of fiberoptics in the LTX company. He retired at the age of 58 after a wonderful career. Mr. Glover met and taught many young men throughout his career about the telephone industry. His most prized job, however, was being a proud father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Mr. Glover was a member of Denman Avenue Baptist Church for 68 years during which he served on many committees. He had been Nursery Director, Children’s Church Pastor, Sunday School teacher, and served on many other committees. He served as a Deacon for 60 years. Pastor John Wood said that the Lord told him to speak with Gerald Glover about starting a Children’s Church due to him having to go to two services if not. He was Children’s Church Pastor for 14 years and raised many kids through that ministry.
In the past, Mr. Glover sang tenor in a quartet with Delbert Williford, Kye Lee, and Woodrow Hill. He sang on KTRE on Sunday mornings before church. Mr. Glover flipped houses before anybody knew what that meant. He didn’t really know much about construction but did this four times. He had a jeep that he would load all the neighborhood kids on and ride around when Englewood was being built. Mr. Glover loved to tease and pick on people and had a nickname for everybody.
