Visitation for George Kenneth Roland, 94, of Lufkin, will be held Saturday, November 23, 2024 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home.
George Kenneth Roland was born to Mike G. Roland and Anna Matte (Foster) Roland in Ardmore, Oklahoma at the beginning of The Great Depression and passed on November 15th, 2024, in his sleep at 94 years. He attended schools with one room and later graduated Ponca City High School. He joined the Army, serving in the Oklahoma 45th Infantry Division. Before being deployed to Korea, he married his high school sweetheart, Charlotte.
Upon his return to the States, he used his G.I. Bill to enroll at Oklahoma A&M, getting his degree in Business in December of 1955. Hired by Phillips 66 they moved to Bartlesville, OK., until his transfer to Sales division in 1959. That moved his family to St. Louis, MO., McLeansboro, Il., Effingham, Il., Peoria, Il., and back to Effingham. He then took a sales position with Marathon Pil Co. Moving his family to Richmond, Indiana in 1966. He became a Commissioner for Centerville Boy Scout Troop 16. In 1969 he quit Marathon and started Steamatic Carpet Cleaners of Easterm Indiana. From 1971 until moving to Lufkin, Texas in 1967 he started Scout Troop 94, serving as it’s first Scoutmaster. He faithfully sponsored the Centerville Bulldogs, attending lots of games. His ads were in the Mortonian.
In 1976, he sold the business and the house, moving to Lufkin, Texas. He introduced the “Home Show” to the Lufkin Lions Club through his Brother-in-Law while starting Lufkin Carpet Cleaners, a business still run by his second son. He was a Master Mason and is in the Angelina College Roadrunners Hall of Fame.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Wynona, Aletha, and Inez; and brothers, Mike Jr., Clyde Norton James, and Doug.
He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Charlotte. Also, his sister Helen of Oklahoma; and sons, Dr. Kenneth D. Roland and wife Angela of Onalaska, Texas, Dale Roland and wife Kathryn of Lufkin, Texas. His grandson Matthew Scott and wife Christina of Kannapolis, N.C. Granddaughters, Amanda Cooper and Stephanie Hocker. Great-Grandson, Robert and Great-granddaughters, Marleah Boone and Charlie Shelley. His many nephews and nieces and great friends all over the country.
