George Allen Cryer, Sr.

Funeral services for George Allen Cryer, Sr., 78, of Zavalla will be held Sunday, January 6, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at Shawnee Church of Jesus Christ in Huntington with Brother Cary Modisett officiating. Interment will follow in the Zavalla Cemetery.

Mr. Cryer was born February 6, 1940 in Zavalla, Texas to the late Willie Mae (Herring) and Calvin Menyard Cryer, and died Thursday, January 3, 2019 at The Joseph House.

Mr. Cryer was a lifelong resident of Zavalla. He owned and operated Cryer Construction for 48 years. He was a member of the Angelina Masonic Lodge #1263 A.F. & A.M. for 37 years and was an officer for 19 years. He served as Worshipful Master from 2005-2006 and received the Golden Trowel Award in 2007, which is the highest award a Masonic Lodge can honor a member for quiet devotion and labor in and about the Lodge and community. Mr. Cryer was raised on the Neches River and always had a soft spot in his heart for it. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and traveling with a special interest in history, especially in the civil war. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who was always willing to help and was known to be a hard worker. Mr. Cryer attended Sulphur Springs Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Mary Lou Cryer of Zavalla; daughters, Janice Hardy of Baytown, Peggy Edgar and husband Pat of Loreauville, Louisiana, and Glentis Marshall of Hudson; sons, George Cryer, Jr. and wife Sheila and Craig Cryer and wife Tootsie, all of Zavalla; grandchildren, Tanya Newkirk, Tony Stanley, David Peters, Jennifer Angelle, Tyson Marshall, Micah Forrest, Shelby Cryer, Shannon Cryer, and Derek Cryer; 15 great-grandchildren; sister, Ray Nell Sansom and husband Steve of Gilmer, sister-in-law, Gina Cryer of Wildwood; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandsons, Darrell Peters and Allen Cryer; sister and brother-in-law, Shirley and Willie Dale Carson; and brother, Calvin Cryer.

Pallbearers will be George Cryer, Jr., Shannon Cryer, Derek Cryer, Eric Peters, Pat Edgar, and Dylan Peters.

Honorary pallbearers will be Don Harrison, Johnny Brandon, Oren Johnson, and members of the Angelina Masonic Lodge #1263 A.F. & A.M.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Joseph House, P.O. Box 150554, Lufkin, Texas 75915.

The family would like express special thanks to the staff at Hospice in the Pines and The Joseph House for the loving care given to Mr. Cryer.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Saturday evening at Carroway Funeral Home in Lufkin.
