Gene Douglass Stewart, Jr.

Funeral services for Gene Douglass Stewart, Jr., 78, of Lufkin will be held Saturday, September 5, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Steve Morris officiating. Cremation arrangements will follow under the direction of Carroway Funeral Home.

Gene Douglass Stewart Jr., of Lufkin, Texas, was born on July 16, 1948, in Huntington, Texas, to Gene Douglass Stewart, Sr. and Annie Laura Stewart. He passed from this earth on Monday, August 31, 2026 leaving behind a legacy of love, friendship, service, and dedication that will continue through the many lives he touched.

Gene was a proud graduate of Lufkin High School, Class of 1967, where he formed many of the lifelong friendships that remained important to him throughout his years. He went on to attend Lamar University, earning a degree in Industrial Engineering.

His education led him to a long and distinguished career with Lufkin Industries, where he worked for more than 40 years before retiring in 2011. He was a Certified Professional Engineer in both Industrial and Mechanical Engineering. While Gene was accomplished in his career, his greatest treasures were the people he loved.

He shared the last 40 years with the love of his life, Ann. Their life together was filled with love, companionship, family, and countless memories. Gene was the best big brother to Liz Springer (John) of Sanger, Texas, and Beverly Collins of Tyler, Texas. He was a father to Jennifer Lynn Booth (Kevin) of Montgomery, Texas, and a proud grandfather to Rickey Douglass and Samuel Victor Booth of Montgomery, Texas.

He was a loving uncle to Todd Douglas (Shawntell) of La Porte, Texas; Ted Douglas (Jenna) of Burkburnett, Texas; and Laurie Fullen (Cary) of Tyler, Texas. He was also a beloved cousin and great-uncle to many.

To know Gene was to know a friend. His kindness, humor, generosity, and genuine interest in others made people feel welcome wherever he went. His friendships were many and enduring, and those who had the privilege of knowing him will carry his memory with them.

One of the greatest commitments of Gene's life was his service to the Boy Scouts of America. He joined Scouting as a Cub Scout in 1954 and went on to achieve the rank of Life Scout. His commitment to Scouting didn’t stop there. It continued throughout his entire life, giving 72 years of service to an organization he deeply believed in.

Gene was proud of what Scouting did for young people. He believed in its values and worked to live those values every day. The Scout Law-Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, and Reverent—was more than a list of words to Gene. It was a guide for how he chose to live his life.

His legacy can be found not only in his professional accomplishments, but in the people he loved, the friendships he cherished, and the countless lives made better by his service.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Gene Douglass Stewart, Sr. and Annie Laura Stewart, and his great-nephew, Tanner Douglas.

He leaves behind a family who loved him deeply, friends who will miss him dearly, and a lifetime of memories that will never be forgotten. His trail may have ended here, but the path he made for others will continue on.

Honorary pallbearers will be Daniel Anderson, Kevin Booth, Ned Barrett, Ted Douglas, Todd Douglas, Skip Douglas, Cary Fullen, Bob Leslie, Larry Long, Jimmy McMullen, Bill Newton, Dennis Quinn, Morris Sumrall, and John Springer.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon prior to the service at the funeral home.
