G.D. "Sonny" Mcclendon

Funeral services for G.D. “Sonny” McClendon, 82, of Lufkin will be held Friday, June 30, 2017 at 12:00 noon in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Brother M.L. “Bud” Magee and Brother Steve Cowart officiating. Interment will follow in the Fairview Cemetery.

Mr. McClendon was born January 1, 1935 in Angelina County, Texas to the late Victoria Kyle (Massingill) and Theria Lawrence McClendon, and died Wednesday, June 28, 2017 in a local nursing home.

Mr. McClendon was a lifetime resident of Lufkin. He was a Sergeant in the U.S. Army, serving on a Nike Guided Missile Base in California. He owned and operated McClendon & Son Construction for 10 years, and was employed at Duncan Construction for 18 years. During his employment with Duncan Construction as job superintendent, he oversaw the construction of many Brookshire Brothers stores across the state. Mr. McClendon enjoyed woodworking and working in the woods. He loved to sing and play the guitar. Mr. McClendon was a member of O’Quinn Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Edna Jo (Russell) McClendon of Lufkin; sons and daughters-in-law, Joe Don and Linda McClendon, Roger and Kim McClendon, all of Lufkin, Mike and Brenda McClendon of Pollok, and Charlie and Linda McClendon of Waco; grandchildren and spouses, Drew and Chelsey McClendon, Erin and Wesley Wallace, Christopher McClendon, Cole McClendon, Carli and Matt Odom, and Collyn McClendon; great-grandchildren, Marleigh Jo McClendon, Kylee, Chesney, and Allie Wallace, and Tripp McClendon; sisters, Yonnie Dixon of Pollok and Donnie Nixon of Carrollton; brothers and sisters-in-law, Clayton and Mary McClendon and R.D. and Joan McClendon, all of Lufkin; sister-in-law, Donna McClendon of Lufkin; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Gary McClendon; and grandson, Eric Landon McClendon.

Pallbearers will be Cole McClendon, Christopher McClendon, Drew McClendon, Travis Ainsworth, Gary Campbell, and Dusty Stringer.

Honorary pallbearers will be Wesley Wallace, Matt Odom, Jimmy Dixon, and Bruce Nixon.

The family extends special thanks to the staff at Lufkin Skilled Nursing, Dr. David Glenn and Dr. Michael Huber for their care of Mr. McClendon.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home.
