Funeral services for Fred Lee Thompson, 94, of Zavalla will be held Saturday, February 26, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at Saron Missionary Baptist Church with Brother Van Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in Cameron Cemetery.
Mr. Thompson was born in Monroe, Louisiana, to J.J. and Ethel Thompson on August 4, 1927 and died on February 17, 2022. He attended Lufkin High School and Stephen F. Austin University. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the Merchant Marines and served all over the world for two years. Then, he enlisted in the Marine Corps. He served in the Pacific and European theaters during World War II. After the war, he married the love of his life, Louise Boykin, in 1951. They raised four children together in Lufkin while Fred worked at Southland Paper Mill. In 1966, Fred relocated the family to Alvin as he worked for NASA on the Apollo flights. After Apollo 13, he went to work for Amoco Chemical Chocolate Bayou. In 1976, he and his wife and son moved to Communist China, and he worked for Pullman-Kellogg to start up a fertilizer plant. He and his wife spent two stints in China. Next, he returned to Alvin to work for Amoco again. After retiring, he and his wife moved back to Zavalla. During his last five years, he lived in Humble and Zavalla with his daughter, Judy.
He enjoyed many hobbies, including motorcycle riding, stock car racing, sailing, and was an avid ham radio operator.
Mr. Thompson will be missed by his family: daughters, Dr. Judy Thompson (Bruce Bandy) of Zavalla, Sharon Taylor (Dr. Dennis Taylor) of Alvin, and Cathy Miglicco (Terry Miglicco) of Alvin; daughter-in-law, Tonya Thompson of Alvin; grandchildren, Michael Stein (Evelia Stein) of Zavalla, Jennifer Stein of Humble, Austin Miller of Houston, Alyssa Schuepbach (John Schuepbach) of San Antonio, Katie Tyler (Dustin Tyler) of San Antonio, Courtney Appel (Jaxson Appel) of League City, Caroline Menefee (Taylor White) of Houston, Trisha Colbert (Austin Colbert) of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Teri Jo Couchman (Chris Couchman) of Alvin; great-grandchildren, Justin Stein of San Marcos, Jacob Stein of College Station, John Patrick Schuepbach, Tyce Tyler, Lennon Tyler, and Maren Tyler of San Antonio, Tade, Lawson, Navi, and Joc Appel of League City, Bradley, Makenzie, and Carter Couchman of Alvin, Jesse and Mason Colbert of Baytown; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Boykin Thompson; his parents, J.J. and Ethel Thompson; his brother, Jack Thompson; and his son, Tommy Thompson.
Pallbearers will be Michael Stein, Austin Miller, Justin Stein, Jacob Stein, Bradley Couchman, Dennis Taylor, Terry Miglicco, and Bruce Bandy.
The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday evening at Carroway Funeral Home in Huntington.
