Evelyn Martin Massingill

Evelyn Martin Massingill enjoyed 96 ½ years with those she loved. She was born Sept. 30, 1927,  in East St. Louis, Illinois, to Samuel Gilbert Martin and Jeanette (Ronveaux) Martin. Evelyn died April 18, 2024, at Southland Healthcare Center in Lufkin.

She met Chester Maurice Massingill of Lufkin during World War II while he was attending the Naval Training School in St. Louis. After Maurice was discharged from the Navy, they were married in St. Louis on June 30, 1946.

They lived on a farm in the Rocky Hill community for the 58 years of their life together and were faithful members of the Rocky Hill Missionary Baptist Church. Evelyn loved mowing and working outdoors, but she was also well known for the homemade bread she brought to church and family gatherings.

Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Ruth Massingill Scholtz and Donald James Scholtz of Huntsville; nephew, Tom Martin of Freeburg, Illinois; niece, Diane Martin of Alton, Illinois; and nephews and wives, Robert and Darla Massingill of Lufkin, Richard and Sara Beth Massingill of Rusk, and Jim and Mary Beth Massingill of Conroe; as well as numerous other relatives and friends.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and her brother, Tom Martin; and sister, Pat Yaroch.

A Memorial Service for family and friends to celebrate Evelyn’s life will be held Saturday, May 25, 2024, beginning at 2:00 p.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel, 2704 South John Redditt Drive in Lufkin.

The family would like to thank the staffs at Southland Healthcare Center and at Hospice in the Pines for their caring support and skilled nursing.
