Ernest Webster Rutland, Jr.

Funeral services for Ernest Webster Rutland, Jr., 93, of Sugar Land, formerly of Lufkin, will be held Friday, December 21, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. in the Henderson Chapel of Lufkin First United Methodist Church with Reverend Dr. Jerome Brimmage officiating. Interment will follow in the Glendale Cemetery.

Mr. Rutland was born November 4, 1925 in Lufkin, Texas to the late Elizabeth (Stovall) and Ernest Webster Rutland, Sr., and died Monday, December 18, 2018 in Sugar Land.

Ernest will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He always had a smile on his face and loved to laugh. He exemplified commitment and love to his wife, Wan Delle, of 60 years and left a legacy of joy and kindness to everyone he met.

A Lufkin resident for most his life, Ernest attended Lufkin High School and played left end for the Panthers in the 1943 State Championship game. He attended Kilgore Junior College and graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University with a degree in business. He served as a radio operator in the Merchant Marines in World War II and in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Ernest retired from Champion International following 30 years of employment as an accountant. He was a member of the Lufkin Host Lions Club and volunteered for the Lufkin High School Alumni Association. He was an avid golfer, and he shot his age of 75 in 2001. He was a longtime member of Lufkin First United Methodist Church. He moved to Sugar Land in 2010.

Survivors include his wife, Wan Delle (Grogan) Rutland of Sugar Land; son, Ernest Rutland III of Sugar Land; daughter and son-in-law, Ann and David Ludwig of Round Rock; grandsons, Brett Rutland of Nacogdoches and Michael Ludwig of Austin; granddaughters, Stephanie Rutland of Missouri City, Lauren Hightower of Cypress, Kelsey Aldrich of Denver, Colorado, and Claire Ludwig of Houston; and a number of other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Jane Newsom.

Pallbearers will be Brett Rutland, Michael Ludwig, Ray Hightower, Alex Aldrich, David Grogan, and Mark Grogan.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones Friday morning prior to the services.
