Graveside services with military honors for Elton Powell, 93, of Lufkin will be held Sunday, April 26, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. at Sand Flat Cemetery with Brother Steve Cowart and Brother Keith Woolf officiating.
Mr. Powell was born March 10, 1933 in Brookeland, Texas to the late Allie Viola (Coleman) and Hugh Jewell Powell, and died Monday, April 20, 2026 in a local hospice facility.
Mr. Powell lived a quiet, steady life marked by faith, loyalty, and deep love for his family. He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956 then began a long and dedicated career with Texas Foundries, where he worked for more than 30 years. After his retirement he worked part time at Kmart for several years.
He shared 63 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Lawanna; a lifetime built on commitment and enduring love.
Mr. Powell was a simple man in the best sense of the word. He enjoyed the comfort of home and found peace in the outdoors, often spending time walking and taking in the beauty of nature. He loved working puzzles and almost always had one spread out on the table. Though often quiet, he had a gift for telling funny stories that brought smiles to those around him. His faith was an important part of his life, having been a member of Trinity Baptist Church for several years and previously attending Mount Zion Church for many more.
Above all, Elton loved his family. He showed that love by being present - attending ball games, band recitals, and following every activity his children and grandchildren were part of whenever he could. His steady support, gentle spirit, and faithful presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Survivors include his wife, Lawanna (Redd) Powell of Lufkin; sons and daughter in law, Randall Keith Powell of Lufkin, and Gregory Alan and Charlotte Powell of Norwell, Massachusetts; grandson, Chris Powell of Seabrook; granddaughter, Ashley Dole of Massachusetts; and sister, Pearlene Wise of San Augustine.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Laverne Wood.
Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Baptist Church, 1641 FM 325, Lufkin, Texas 75901.
The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Saturday evening at Carroway Funeral Home.
