Funeral services for Elsie “Alice (Potter) Childress, 85, of Grapeland will be held Sunday, January 4, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. at First United Pentecostal Church in Lufkin with Pastor Joe Stanley officiating. Graveside services will be held Tuesday, January 6, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. in the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen.
Mrs. Childress was born December 26, 1040 in Lancaster, New York to the late Bernice (Walagorski) and Seldon George Potter, and died Sunday, December 28, 2025 at her residence.
Alice had resided in Lufkin for 40 years prior to moving to Grapeland. She worked as the custodian at First United Pentecostal Church, retiring after more than 40 years of dedicated service. She was also a faithful member of First United Pentecostal Church and her church was her life. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and she will be terribly missed by all.
Survivors include her husband, Dennis Childress of Grapeland; son and daughter-in-law, James and Jenny-Lynn Story of Spring; daughters, Cynthia Story of Yuma, Arizona, Mary Blanchard of San Diego, California; sons, Kristin Childress of Dallas, Daniel Childress of Tyler, Frances Childress of Grapeland; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister, Cindy Varner; brothers, Bobby Potter, Ronald Potter; and numerous other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and two sisters.
The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Saturday evening at Carroway Funeral Home in Lufkin.
