Elizabeth Hamilton Lee, a lifelong resident of Lufkin, Texas, was born December 28, 1927 in Lufkin, Texas, and died on December 11, 2018 at the age of 90.

Whether she was known to you as Mother, Sister, Miss Liz, Friend, or simply as “Grandmother,” to know her would have left a huge impression on your life. Liz lived the majority of her life in Angelina County. A graduate of Satterwhite Business College, she and her husband, Kye Lee, were in the insurance business for many years in Lufkin. Mostly behind the scenes, she orchestrated opportunities and was a faithful and important partner and major contributor to the success of their business.

But the most important thing in her life, apart from her family, was the church that was born in their living room, Denman Avenue Baptist Church. Her church family was everything to her. A dedicated member, she stood tall and proud in the choir every Sunday, even into the final years of her life, when requiring help to get to her post on the back row. She taught Sunday School, led GA’s, Vacation Bible School, and served on just about every committee there was. To Denman Ave…..well, she just WAS.

Having experienced unimaginable loss in her lifetime with the death of a young child, later her parents, her husband, her daughter, she held her white head of hair high and put a smile on her face, and hit each day with determination and a smile. No matter the circumstances and disappointments of life that hit her, Liz seemed capable to meet the challenge with a strength of character and a committed love for her Lord. Given the most minor opportunity, she would tell you about Jesus or quote you a poem, sometimes both at the same time.

In the final days of her life, when Alzheimer’s had mostly consumed her formerly bright and sharp mind, she would sing over and over the chorus, “How do I know that Christ is mine? Just turn to Romans 10:9. Accepting Him, loving Him, I know He’s mine.”

In addition to her committed work at Denman Ave., Liz volunteered at Gloria Russell Ministries, Godtel, Most Excellent Way, and Gideon’s International.

Family and friends described her in both like and different ways: “A rock, dependable, elegant, creative, wise, resourceful, loyal, outspoken, tenacious (a couple said, ‘stubborn’ 😊), generous, intelligent, perfectionist, inventive, spiritual, hardworking, consistent, gracious, and loving” were all words used to describe her. More than one grandchild said, “I thought I was her favorite.”

Preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Kye Lee; her parents, Ernest and Adin Hamilton; her daughters, Leslie Kay Lee and Suzanne Lee Denney, Liz is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Kyeleen and Tom Maberry of Lufkin and Dottie and Bill Rushing of Frisco; sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Jim Lott of Clear Lake; brother, Ernest Hamilton of Kansas City, Missouri; nine grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews; and too many friends to count.

The family would like to thank the staff of Hospice in the Pines for your respectful kindness to our Mother during her final hours. And a very special thank you to the staff at Pinecrest Retirement Community where she lived the last four years of her life. Especially, her precious nurse, Suzanne in the George Henderson Memory Care Unit. Your loving care and watch over her will forever be fondly and gratefully remembered.

Memorials may be made to Gideon’s International, Lufkin West Camp, P.O. Box 1831, Lufkin, Texas 75902, or to Hospice in the Pines, 1504 W. Frank Ave., Lufkin, Texas 75904.
