Edward "Hutch" Burr

September 5, 1969 — November 18, 2025

Lufkin, TX

Memorial services for Edward Hutchinson Burr, fondly known as “Hutch,” 56, of Lufkin will be held Saturday, November 29, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at Eastview United Pentecostal Church with Pastor David Hunt, Pastor Justin Bullard, and Brother Daniel Nabors officiating. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Carroway Funeral Home.

Hutch was born on September 5, 1969 in Garland, Texas to Thomas and Barbara Burr. They lived in Waco, Texas, where Hutch was raised. He passed away peacefully with his family by his side after a months-long battle with cancer on Tuesday, November 18, 2025.

Hutch was a proud Lumberjack alumnus and held degrees in Education and Business Marketing from Stephen F. Austin State University. After teaching public school for many years, Hutch returned to his alma mater. He worked as the Information Technologist for the Lucille DeWitt School of Nursing and eventually retired in July 2025. Admired by his co-workers, Hutch performed his work with dedication and always had a ready smile and willingness to serve, even in the middle of his cancer battle.

Hutch loved the outdoors and fished, golfed, and hunted often. In his last months, he enjoyed special trips bay fishing, catfishing, and hunting. The highlight of his bucket list was traveling to Alabama to play his favorite golf course where, against all physical odds, he birdied Hole #17. Hutch’s love of fishing started as a small boy; he would get up early on summer days, grab his tackle, and walk the five miles one way to the Bosque River to fish off the bank.

Most important of all, Hutch lived his faith in God and led his family with strength and compassion. He loved his wife, Kathy, faithfully and deeply. He found great happiness raising his children and being the best Papa to Ava, his only grandchild. He worked faithfully in his local church for many years by teaching Bible studies, leading the Lifeline New Discipleship Class, and serving in the church media ministry.

Hutch’s beautiful smile, unending optimism, and ready laughter will be remembered forever by those who knew and loved him.

During his cancer battle, Hutch was adopted by Ms. Mckenzie Kartye’s third grade homeroom class at Anderson Elementary. The letters and cards he received from the children were a tremendous honor and encouragement to him.

Hutch is survived by his wife of 14 years, Kathy; his children, Derek Burr, Aaron Cox and wife Caroline, Kaleigh Miller and husband Don Miller, Brenna Burr, and Kelsi Cox, whom he called “Little One,” being the youngest; and one grandchild, Avaryn Howe; his father, Thomas Hutchinson Burr; sisters, Shannon Ashe and husband Rick, Kristen Eaton and husband Ron; and loving niece and nephews, Addie Ashe, Andy Strickland and Hutch, “Little Hutch” Strickland.

Hutch was preceded in death by his mother, Barbara McClung Burr, who passed on April 13, 2025.

Honorary pallbearers include Drew Huffty, Daniel Rast, Mark Hobbs, Brandon Boulware, Don Miller, Robert Trawick, Rick Ashe, and Jonathan Graeber.

Throughout Hutch’s fight with cancer, he received strength and inspiration from the memory of Alex Trawick, who also battled cancer. If desired, memorial contributions may be designated to this charity held closest to Hutch’s heart: The Alex Project, P.O. Box 151251, Lufkin, Texas 75915 or online at Alex-project.org.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Saturday morning prior to the service.
