Edna Merle Jones Baker, 90, of Huntington died Sunday, March 22, 2026 at her residence. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Carroway Funeral Home. The family will have a memorial service at a later date.
Mrs. Baker was born March 1, 1936 in Grapeland, Texas to the late Edna Mae (Brumley) and Simon Eugene Jones. She resided in Huntington most of her life.
Mrs. Baker lived a life defined by quiet dedication, deep love, and steady faithfulness to those around her. She devoted 33 years to teaching eighth grade in the Huntington School District, shaping the lives of countless students with patience, care, and a commitment to helping them grow. Teaching was more than a profession to her; it was a calling she carried with grace throughout her life.
Outside the classroom, Mrs. Baker found joy in the simple things she loved most. She had a special fondness for animals, especially her beloved Pomeranians, but her love extended to all creatures. She enjoyed working puzzles, spending time outdoors, and above all, fishing, which was one of her greatest pleasures. Though she never claimed to love cooking, she faithfully hosted Sunday lunches for her family, creating a space where everyone could gather, connect, and feel at home.
Mrs. Baker shared a remarkable 68 years of marriage with her beloved husband W.D., a testament to a lifetime of love and devotion. Her family was her greatest treasure, and she poured herself into caring for them in both quiet and meaningful ways. She will be dearly missed and forever loved by all who had the blessing of knowing her.
Survivors include her husband of 68 years, W.D. Baker of Huntington; daughters and sons-in-law, Debra and Genard Cartwright, and Dena and Rory Dale Perkins, all of Huntington; grandchildren and spouses, Dustin Golden, Alyssa Tant, Jacob and Taylor Cartwright, Dylan and Brooke Cartwright, Jace Cartwright, and Kayleen and Randy Laird; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Richard D. Jones; sisters, Wynell “Nell” Roberts and Dena M. Jones; and her beloved Pomeranians, Tiny, Tazz, and Tink.
Memorial contributions may be made to the McMullen Memorial Library, 900 N Main Street, Huntington, Texas 75949 or the Winnie Berry Humane Society of Angelina County, P.O. Box 472, Lufkin, Texas 75902.
