Memorial services for Dr. Larry Phillips, 82, of Lufkin will be held Sunday, February 23, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. in the Angelina College Shands Gymnasium with Brother Zack Phillips and Brother Zane Crawford officiating.
Doris and Herman Phillips welcomed their first son, Larry M. Phillips, October 22, 1942. In the next few years two brothers, Lynn and Gene, would follow. The boys grew up in Houston and Larry would eventually go on to attend Rice University on a basketball scholarship. He chose the University of Texas to continue his education and obtained his master’s degree. Then he began his lifelong career working in education as a teacher and coach, just like his father. He soon moved on to an Assistant Principal position and decided to pursue a doctorate at the University of Houston. In 1975 he began working at North Harris County Community College (now Lone Star) and found his mission. That mission ultimately led him to Angelina College where he found a perfect fit and a home and remained for 25 years until his retirement.
He loved to start each day with a spirited discussion at his favorite doughnut shop, and filled his days with family time, sporting events of all types, studying history, golf with friends, his books, and long trips down “blue roads”.
Larry’s family includes his beloved wife, Thresa; daughters, Marisa Phillips, Jill Saenz and husband Lawrence Saenz and children Luke and Maggie, grandson, Joshua Emshoff and his fiancée, Zoe Drew, Brianne McManus and husband Todd McManus and children Hope and Will McManus; and chosen family Leigh Anne Hale. Extended family includes his brother, Lynn Phillips (deceased) and wife Cindy, and sons Zack and Clay Phillips and their families, and Gene and wife Leigh Ann Phillips and their children Mark Phillips and Kristi Phillips and her family; nephew, Chad Jones and family; and brother-in-law, James “Butch” Foster and wife Linda, and their children Jaime Locknane and family, and Todd Foster.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers or gifts you may honor Dr. Phillips’ legacy by making a gift to the scholarship under his name at Angelina College (please make checks payable to Angelina College Foundation, specify the scholarship, and mail to 3500 S 1st Street, Lufkin, Texas 75901), or to a charity of your choice.
