Funeral services for Doyle Burnett, 79, of Huntington will be held Thursday, February 1, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel in Lufkin with Brother Keith Woolf and Delton Smith officiating. Interment will follow in the Carrell Cemetery.
Mr. Burnett was born August 25, 1944 in Beaumont, Texas to the late Ragna (Squyres) and Hollis Burnett, and died Friday, January 26, 2024 in a hospital in The Woodlands, Texas.
Doyle grew up in LaLa Hill Baptist Church, and was a member of Ozias Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon since 1975, was an adult Sunday School teacher, and song leader for many years. He was very active in the community, was a leader for many years. He organized the 4-H Club in Huntington, helped organize Huntington Little Dribblers Basketball Program and coached Basketball and Youth Baseball many years in Huntington and Zavalla. Doyle served on the HISD School Board for eight years. He was an avid fan of HHS Basketball and didn’t miss many games. He was President of the Carrell Cemetery Association for many years. He retired from the Paper Mill after 35 years of service. Doyle was an encourager, supported the youth, and was a fine Christian man.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Lucille (Phillips) Burnett; daughter and son-in-law, Katrina and Mike Wolfe of Huntington; son, Timothy Doyle Burnett of Huntington; grandchildren and spouses, Chris and Lesley Wade of Zavalla, Colten Burnett; great-grandchildren, Carter and Wymberley Wade of Zavalla; step granddaughter, Courtney Gerber and her children, Bella, Olivia, Branson and Waylon; sister, Claudia (Burnett) McKenzie of Magnolia; sisters-in-law, Ethel Simms and husband Kenneth of Lufkin, Willean Conte of Atlanta, New York; special cousin, Peggy Squyres McGinnis; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hollis and Ragna Burnett; and brother, David Burnett.
Pallbearers will be Keith Smith, Jason Collins, Garry Evett, Chris Wade, Stanley Temple, and Elwin Lamon.
Honorary pallbearers will be Mike Wolfe, Carter Wade, Ethan Collins, James McKenzie, and the 1962 Huntington High School State Champion Basketball Team.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Carrell Cemetery Association, 2494 Ralph Nerren Road, Huntington, Texas 75949 or Ozias Missionary Baptist Church, 257 Ozias Road, Huntington, Texas 75949.
The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home in Lufkin.
