She was born May 5, 1934 in Colmesneil, Texas to James W. and Mattie Bell (Cryer) Grimes. The second of nine children, she helped care for her younger siblings often and had a strong bond with each one.

She married Henry Wayne Hamilton January 20, 1951. She earned a certificate in secretarial training from Elliot Business College in Beaumont in 1951 at the age of 17. After Wayne served in the Army, they moved to Clute, Texas where they had their 3 sons. Dorothy had several jobs including a service writer at Clyde V Lee Motors in Freeport, cook at Brazosport ISD and owner of the Purple Pride Bar and Grill. After Wayne's retirement in 1986, they moved back to Huntington, Texas where they became widely known for their gardening skills. It was at this time they joined the Church of Christ in Huntington and became faithful members. Dorothy and Wayne were married 59 years and 11 months before his passing in 2010.
