A very strong and independent woman with a loving and giving heart, Dorothy Lee Card passed away Friday, March 28, 2025, at the age of 96. Graveside services will be held Monday, March 31, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. at Fielder Memorial Cemetery, Lufkin, Texas, with Brother Leon Wallace and James Barge officiating.
Dorothy was born March 22, 1929 to German and Allie Bess (Murray) Terry. She grew up in Lufkin, Texas and attended Lufkin High School where she was a star basketball player. Her favorite story was the day she was on the court with the guys and they challenged her to hit the goal from mid-court. She accepted the challenge and despite their chidings that she would never make the goal, she sank the shot and immediately the chidings turned to disbelief and then praise.
Dorothy was a giver and loved to share the gospel of Jesus. She loved to encourage teenagers in her earlier years and traveled many miles to bring them to church. Her greatest joy was teaching home Bible studies along with countless Sunday school classes. For several years she also had a jail ministry for women and taught them each week the goodness of God. Dorothy was a member of New Life United Pentecostal Church.
Dorothy believed in hard work and was quick to point out those that did not do their fair share. She shared often the experience of hauling hay that the family had baled near the lake. When turning at the traffic light in Huntington, several bales fell off the trailer and she and the haulers were madly dashing to load it back on while all the men sat in their trucks watching her load the bales. She related that to her strength learned as a farm girl early on where she worked by the side of her dad.
Crafting was one of Dorothy’s most enjoyable pastimes. She could make anything she set her mind to using her God-given artistic talent. A headstrong and sometimes stubborn woman, she would tackle anything life sent her way. She always relied on God who delivered her numerous times from death and was quick to point out His faithfulness.
Dorothy and David owned and operated Card Drug Store in Huntington, Texas during the late 1940’s. She was president of the Huntington ISD PTA during the early 1970’s and received a lifetime membership.
The greatest joy in Dorothy’s life was living on the land she worked as a child. Her joy until the day she passed was to sit in the house and watch the cows eat on the hill where she had picked cotton while growing up and sharing those memories with those that would listen.
