Don Byrd

June 10, 1942 — July 12, 2022

Funeral services for Don Byrd, 80, of Wells will be held Saturday, July 16, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Robert King, Brother Trampus Black, Brother Ennis Fuller, and Brother Grant Haynes officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Wells.

Mr. Byrd was born June 10, 1942 in Lufkin, Texas to the late Bertha Carman (Vann) and Robert Elmer Byrd, and died Tuesday, July 12, 2022 at his residence.

Don was a lifelong resident of Wells. He worked as a supervisor for Southern Pacific Railroad for 23 years and retired as a dispatcher for Yellow Freight after more than 20 years of service. He was such a bright and uplifting person who never met a stranger and could always make anyone smile. His family recalls his playful side as well, such as telling the grandkids what they were getting for Christmas and singing Happy Birthday to each of them while also playing the bugle (even though he did not know how to play it)! In his spare time he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and being on his tractor. Don loved life, living it to the fullest. If you were fortunate enough to have known him, you were a witness to a great legacy he leaves behind in this world, a legacy of a man devoted to his Lord and church, a man who fiercely loved his family, and a man who will be missed dearly. Mr. Byrd was a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church in Wells and served as Deacon for 30 years.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, one month, and two days, Glenda Byrd, whom he affectionately called “Shug”, of Wells; daughter and son-in-law, Sheryl and Frank Beathard of Wells; son and daughter-in-law, Bryan Frank and Anita Byrd of Pollok; grandchildren and their spouses, Rena and Jimmy Wilson, Bryanna and Dylan Coleman, Bobby and Meredyth Byrd, Alyssa and Dexter Lane Rodrigues, Brandy and Logan Webb, Willie and Hazel Wilcutt, Blake Beathard, Brandall and Morgan Beathard; 16 great-grandchildren; sister, Sue Sessions of Wells; numerous other relatives and friends, as well as Bo, his faithful Beagle.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Robert “Nubbin” Byrd.

Pallbearers will be Bobby Byrd, Jimmy Wilson, Dexter Rodrigues, Logan Webb, Dylan Coleman, Willie Wilcutt, and Blake Beathard.

Honorary pallbearers will be Rick Williamson, James “BoBo” McKay, and Keith Fuller.
