Dema Nell Higgins Halsell

Funeral services for Dema Nell Higgins Halsell, 72, of Katy, formerly of Lufkin, will be held Friday, May 31, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Randy White officiating. Interment will follow in Wallace Chapel Cemetery.

Dema Nell Higgins Halsell was born November 17, 1951 to Ottis and Louise Higgins of Lufkin, and entered the gates of Heaven May 27, 2024 in Katy, Texas.

Dema graduated from Hudson High School in 1970. She then went to Massey Business College in Lufkin and began her career with the State of Texas. For 30 years she worked in the Special Nutrition Programs and enjoyed meeting many people and making several lifelong friends.

She was saved and baptized at O’Quinn Baptist Church as a child. She joined Keltys First Baptist Church as a young woman and was a member for over 30 years. She moved to Katy, Texas to be close to her daughter and son-in-law and grandkids and joined First Baptist Church of Katy.

After moving back to Lufkin, she joined Denman Avenue Baptist Church and was active until she had a major stroke in August of 2021.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Anna and James Taylor; son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Sara Halsell; grandchildren, Abigail Taylor, Andrew Taylor, Tyler Halsell, Cody Halsell, and Owen Halsell; brother and sister-in-law, Les and Jan Higgins; sister and brother-in-law, Shelia and Atmar Lester; nieces and husbands, Veronica and Monty Nettles, Misti and Brad West, and Bonnie and Joe Arrington; nephews and wives, Kevin and Jennifer Higgins, and Jamie and Whitney Carlile; and numerous cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother and sister-in-law, J.T. and Karen Carlile; and sister-in-law, Shaila Morris.

Pallbearers will be Monty Nettles, Tracy Nunn, Greg Hales, Kevin Higgins, Jamie Carlile, and Roman Collins.

Honorary pallbearers will be Andrew Taylor, Tyler, Cody, and Owen Halsell.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home.
