Delmer Archer Carter, Sr.

Funeral services for Delmer Archer Carter, Sr., 90, of Zavalla will be held Saturday, April 29, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel in Lufkin with Brother Jackson Colwell officiating. Interment will follow in Barge Cemetery.

Mr. Carter was born September 8, 1932 in Mountain Park, Oklahoma to the late Leona (Myers) and Noah Emerson Carter, and died Wednesday, April 26, 2023 at his residence.

At the age of 4, his mother was sent to the hospital and he was then raised by his aunt, Aida Church, in Slida, Colorado, separated from his siblings until he was 11. Then he was sent to live with his other aunt, Myrtle Slocum, in Orange. When he turned 16 he moved to Galveston where he garnered his independence and became a theater manager. When Mr. Carter was 24 he moved back to Orange where he met his bride-to-be, Genevieve Barfield. They were married for 62 years.

Mr. Carter had a personal relationship with his Lord and Savior. Spanning a career in ministry of over 45 years, he served as Pastor of Rocky Springs Baptist Church in Rockland, Harmony Baptist Church in Woodville, and Davisville Baptist Church in Lufkin. Mr. Carter was also a supervisor at Land o’ Pines for 26 years.

Survivors include his wife, Genevieve (Barfield) Carter of Zavalla; sons and daughters-in-law, Delmer, Jr. and Deb Carter of Zavalla, Larry and Lynda Carter of Huntington, Quinton Carter of Zavalla, and Stephen Carter of Colorado; daughters and son-in-law, Virginia Havard of Zavalla, Sylvia and Shane Willoughby of San Augustine, and Lindsey Carter of Florida; sisters, Josephine Hinkle of Arizona and Wanda Howell of Arkansas; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, spanning five generations; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Terry Carter; son-in-law, Sonny Havard; brothers, Alvin Carter, Jack Carter and Ed Carter; sisters, Julia (Carter) Olson and Dorothy Carter; and mother-in-law, Ida Mae Barfield.

Pallbearers will be Derek Ponder, Shane Carter, Adam Carter, Clayton Carter, Ricky Marshall, and Justin Moody.

Honorary pallbearers will be Tom Ross, Austin Carter, and Quinton Carter.

In lieu of flowers, donations toward funeral expenses would be much appreciated and may be paid directly to Carroway Funeral Home.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home in Lufkin.
