Graveside services with military honors for CSC Billy J. Stovall, USN (Ret.), 92, of Lufkin will be held Saturday, September 7, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. in Huntington Cemetery with Pastor Gene Hazell officiating.
Billy was born August 26, 1932 in Garrison, Texas to the late Dixie (Humphreys) and Joe V. Stovall, and died Monday, September 2, 2024 in Lufkin.
Billy retired from the U.S. Navy following 20 years of service to his country. His military career began at the Naval Training Center in San Diego, California and ended at Naval Air Station in Imperial Beach, California. His career path, a total of 17 different assignments, included deployment on the USS Oklahoma City, the USS Algol during the Cuban missile crisis, and the USS Chicago (“The Proud Ship Chicago”) during the Vietnam War. Billy was always so proud to serve his country. Following his years in the Navy, Billy worked at the Papermill, retiring after 15 years.
Billy joined Fairview Baptist Church in 1978 and served as a deacon for many years. He served as Chaplain at the Lufkin VFW Post 1836. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Some may have found his personality steadfast and militaristic, but everyone agrees that he had a tender heart and was the man to call for help. Billy was always grateful for his ability to provide for his family and help his friends. Many of Billy’s laugh-out-loud, special moments were spent with his siblings. However, the bond between Billy and his twin sisters, Beryl and Sheryl was rare and extraordinarily special.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Nita Stovall of Etoile; daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Eric Watson of Lufkin; grandchildren, William, Tiffany, and Lee; great-grandson, Cash; sisters and brothers-in-law, Carolyn and Billy Wayne Duke of Lake Jackson, Beryl and Eddie Bryant of Lufkin, Sheryl and Allen Lehr of Lufkin; sister-in-law, Bea Stovall of Lufkin; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of almost 50 years, Sandra Sue (Cochran) Stovall; son, Kenny Ray Stovall; brothers and sister-in-law, G.T. “Thomas” and Ann Stovall and Dixon “Shorty” Stovall; and grandson, Zachary.
Pallbearers will be Greg Spivey, Tommy Stovall, Drew Stovall, Billy Stovall, Andy Spivey, and G.T. “Tommy” Stovall III.
The family extends a special thanks to the staff at Pinnacle Assisted Living and everyone else who helped Dad at the end of his life.
