Funeral services for Clement Peter Sumners, Jr., 95. of Lufkin will be held Friday, February 16, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Cyprian’s Episcopal Church with Fr. Max Reynolds and Reverend Charles Sumners officiating. Graveside services with military honors will follow in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park.
Mr. Sumners was born November 17, 1922 in Laredo, Texas to the late Leona and Clement P. Sumners, and died Monday, February 12, 2018 in Lufkin.
After living in a number of towns in South Texas, his family moved to Houston in 1927. He attended Houston Independent schools until 1935, when he moved to Conroe. He graduated from Conroe High School in 1939. After receiving a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Rice Institute in 1943, he entered the US Army Air Corps commissioned as a Maintenance Engineering Officer. He served as a Captain in the South Pacific on Tinian Island during World War II.
In 1946 he married Opal Lavonne Smith and moved to Lufkin, joining his father in a Pontiac dealership. In 1961 he formed Sumners Mechanical Contractors specializing in commercial plumbing and air conditioning until he retired in 1997.
Many of his community activities included being a charter member of the Lufkin Kiwanis Club, member of the Lufkin Jaycees and Pineywood Engineering Society, serving as President. He was a director of The First State Bank, Republic Bank of Texas, and NCNB.
Mr. Sumners was a member of St. Cyprians Episcopal Church serving on the Vestry and building committee. He also was the first President of St. Cyprians Episcopal School Board.
Survivors include sons, Larry and wife Susan, and Philip and wife Jeannine; and daughter, Susan Yeager; seven grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his mother; father; daughter, Donna Sue; and his wife of 70 years, Opal.
Pallbearers are John Sumners, Russell Sumners, Kenneth Sumners, David Yeager, Stephen Yeager and Taylor Larabee.
Honorary pallbearers are Mike Taylor and Jimmy Lawrence.
