Cecil Ferguson

October 2, 1934 — June 29, 2024

Memorial services with military honors for Cecil Ferguson, 89, of Zavalla will be held Monday, July 8, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church with The Reverend Gordon N. Blackman, Jr. officiating. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Carroway Funeral Home.

Mr. Ferguson was born October 2, 1934 in Madisonville, Texas to the late Jewel (Collier) and Clarence Jefferson Ferguson, and passed away Saturday, June 29, 2024.

Cecil was a loving father, grandfather, mentor, teacher, leader and coach. He served in the United States Army as a cook stationed in Alaska. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degree in Biology and Physical Education from Sam Houston State University. He met the love of his life, Barbara Bayley, in Newfoundland while both were working for the Department of Defense as teachers in 1964. They married July 10, 1965 and celebrated 56 years together. Cecil taught and served as an assistant coach. When Angelina college was established in 1968, he was named Athletic Director and Head Basketball Coach. Coach Ferg served in this role from 1968-1972. During his tenure at AC, he taught a variety of science, agriculture, and PE courses. Although he officially retired in 1995, he assisted with basketball off and on through 2016. He was instrumental in choosing Angelina College’s colors and mascot. Cecil was a leader for Angelina County 4-H for more than 10 years and continued to support 4-H the rest of his life. He was a club leader for Livestock 4-H and State-to-State Exchange, in which both of his daughters were heavily involved. He drove all over the state carrying 4-hers to camps, leadership activities, and community service projects. He had the greenest thumb. Everything he planted grew beautifully, sometimes as big as the house! Cecil was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Lufkin since 1968. He served as a Deacon, Elder and Youth Leader.

Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Cynthia and John Burnett of Bremond, Elizabeth and Clayton Boulware of Zavalla; grandchildren, Kristin Long and husband Jordan, Ryan Burnett, Holden Boulware, Reagan Burnett; great-grandchildren, Greyson Ace Long, Iris Rae Long; brother, Willie Ferguson; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Barbara (Bayley) Ferguson; grandson, Ethan Seth Boulware; and brothers, James Ferguson and Jesse Ferguson.
