Carol Lee Land Portis (Fowler, Eason) was born December 7, 1937, to Ruby and Roy Land. They lived in Chester, Arkansas and Carol was born in Fayetteville. When Carol was 6 years old, they moved to Baytown, Texas because her dad was going to work at Humble. Carol went to school at San Jacinto Elementary, Baytown Junior School, and Robert E Lee High. She was in the band and played the clarinet. She received a scholarship to SMU, but her parents wanted her closer to home, so she went to Sam Houston State University. She received her bachelor’s degree in English, a master’s degree in counseling, and other certifications as well. She taught English at Texas City High and at LaPorte High School. She was qualified and promoted to counselor, assistant principal and eventually Director of the Alternative School for that district. Carol was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, the Women’s Guild, Choir at Church, and the Community Choir in Wimberley.
Carol is survived by her daughters and son in laws, Connie and Johnny Burgess and Diana and Lance Parker; her sister, Sandy Barclay; her grandchildren, Jason and wife Megan Burgess, Matthew Burgess, Jenny and Dan Foster, Jared and Mackinsey Klein; her great grandchildren, Bennett and Connor Burgess and Lila and Levi Klein; her sister-in-law, Sherry Portis; her niece, Elaine Barclay; her nephews, Stan Portis and wife Audra, and Cliff Portis.
Carol went to heaven on March 17, 2024, after a long illness of dementia. Her love, smile, and zest for life will be greatly missed.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Ruby and Roy Land; her brother-in-law, Gary Barclay; her husband, Francis Portis; her husband, Billy Paul Fowler; her husband, Eldridge Eason; her brothers-in-law, Percy Portis, James Portis, Glenn Portis; and her sister-in-law, Sheryl Portis.
A graveside service will be held at Cedar Bayou Masonic Cemetery, 2850 Ferry Road, Baytown, Texas 77520, on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at 11:00 am. Family and friends will gather afterwards at El Toro on Garth Rd. in Baytown for visiting and fellowship. We would love to see family and friends as we pay tribute to our mother.
