Funeral services for Bryant “James” Matthews, 83, of Lufkin will be held Saturday, October 13, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Roy Hall officiating. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Carroway Funeral Home.
Mr. Matthews was born October 1, 1935 in Camden, Texas to the late Gladys (Loftin) Matthews and L.B. Matthews, and died Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at his residence.
Mr. Matthews was a lifelong resident of Lufkin and retired from Lufkin Industries with 36 years of employment. He was a member of Union Springs Baptist Church in Corrigan. He always enjoyed working in his yard, vegetable garden, and rose garden. He loved traveling and his family. Mr. Matthews was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Peggy Matthews of Lufkin; daughter, Jamie Howell and husband Wayne of Apple Springs; son, Wayne Matthews and family of Alto; stepson, Glenn Conner of Longview; granddaughters, Amanda Aguilar and husband Daniel of Lufkin and Jessica Cockrell and Dustin Cloyd of Apple Springs; grandson, Matthew Hollis of Apple Springs, Terry McGlothin of Alto, and Cruz Conner of Longview; great-granddaughters, Makenzie and Lillyan Cockrell of Apple Springs; his special girl, Tanya Purvis; sister, Pam Hollis and husband Mike of Apple Springs; sister-in-law, Mary Birchfield of Longview; brother-in-law, Charles Combs of Longview; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Patsy Bell, Judy Rice, and Louise Street; and brother, L.B. Matthews.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice in the Pines, 1504 W. Frank Avenue, Lufkin, Texas 75904.
The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.
