Funeral services for Brent Montgomery Slaton, 42, of Lufkin will be held Saturday, October 20, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with Dr. Charles M. Roberts, Dr. Jacob Fitzgerald, and Rev. Dr. Jerome Brimmage officiating. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Carroway Funeral Home.
Brent was born April 4, 1976 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Nancy K. (Fee) and Stephen Dale Slaton, and passed away after a long battle with Scleroderma on Tuesday, October 16, 2018, surrounded by family and friends. Brent was born in the cornfields, but soon moved to the Peach state. He often said he was a Methodist boy in a Catholic school during his time in Rome, Georgia, before moving to Lufkin in 1990.
Brent, affectionately known as “Brent the Lifeguard”, had a zest for life and was always the life of the party! Brent lived life to the fullest and embodied the words of Robert Earl Keen – “the road goes on forever and the party never ends.” His parties were often associated with local charities and events because he had a true passion for his community. Brent never shied away from a costume, and a photo op with him was the best picture of the night. Brent began his life of community service after many rounds of “Zombie” by The Cranberries as a TKE at Texas Tech University. Once he met a pretty girl in the Pineywoods, he transferred to Stephen F. Austin State University and earned his degree in Communications. Brent continued his dedication to service after college – he joined the Lufkin Hosts Lions Club and served in several different roles within the organization. One night at “The Best Show on Dirt”, also known as the Angelina Benefit Rodeo, he was the ringleader and orchestrated the “borrowing” of the Z&OO train. Brent was on the First Christian PreSchool Board and was a Junior Achievement volunteer. He also served on the Lufkin Parks and Recreation Board; he was devoted to the development of baseball in Lufkin. Brent was a member of the Angelina College Athletics Board and never missed a sporting event. Although he was not a Panther by birth, he became a life-long Panther in 1990.
The pretty girl in the Pineywoods was a Panther by birth, and he became the “man of the Junior League of Lufkin” once they were married. Brent was the Boy Friday for everything she needed – museum trees, copies, costumes. He was by Shelly’s side for all of their leadership roles. Together, they have created a legacy of leadership and giving for Mack. Brent never met a stranger, and those blues eyes could tell lots of stories. If you met him once, you knew him for life.
Uncle (n) – an unrelated older male friend, especially of a child. Brent was an uncle to many – our Uncle Brentie. There are too many to name; Brent was a friend and mentor to so many. His wife Shelly and son Mack will continue to emulate his legacy. His family will do the same. He is survived by parents Nancy K. (Fee) and Stephen Slaton of Lufkin; brother Hunter Slaton and wife Heather of College Station; Jeff Slaton and wife Brenda of Rushville, Indiana: in-laws, Debbie and James “Wheel” Crawford of Lufkin; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Caron and Jeff Cook of Lufkin; niece, Presley Cook of Lufkin; nephews, Paxton Cook of Lufkin, David, Brandon and Michael Slaton of Indiana; and numerous other cousins and relatives.
The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. Friday evening at Carroway Funeral Home because he would never want the Panther Nation to miss the game against Tomball!
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Lufkin Host Lions Club or the Scleroderma Foundation.
