Graveside services for Asa Gibson Peavy, Jr., 74, of Lufkin will be held Saturday, January 24, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at Largent Cemetery.
Mr. Peavy was born August 4, 1951 in Lufkin, Texas to the late Dorothy Aimee (Woodworth) and Asa Gibson Peavy, Sr., and died Monday, January 12, 2026 at his residence.
Mr. Peavy lived a life shaped by curiosity, creativity, and a deep love of learning. He graduated from Hudson High School in 1969 and earned his undergraduate degree in English from Stephen F. Austin State University. He later received a master’s degree in Library Science from North Texas University and a second master’s degree in Offset Printing from the University of Alabama.
A lifelong scholar and artist, Asa owned and operated his own printing press, working under the name Bullnettle Press, where he created beautiful, artistic prints that reflected his craftsmanship and eye for detail. Long before digital greetings, he delighted family and friends by mailing these prints each Christmas, a tradition that later evolved into his thoughtfully written Christmas emails, often accompanied by his photography.
Asa also had a deep passion for film photography, collecting more than 150 vintage cameras and skillfully modifying many of them to capture infrared images. He generously shared these striking photographs with family, especially during the holidays.
During his academic years, Asa served as a teaching assistant at several universities, including Stephen F. Austin State University, North Texas University, the University of Alabama, and Pan American University in Harlingen, Texas. He later built a distinguished career at the San Francisco Public Library, where he served for many years as Director of Rare Books before retiring more than a decade ago.
Shortly after retiring, Asa returned home to Texas to help his brother, Woody, care for their mother - a role he fulfilled with quiet devotion and tremendous generosity. He held a special love for Shakespearean works and Arthurian legend, and he shared his passion for books, stories, and creativity generously with his family. He was well loved and will be deeply missed.
Survivors include brother and sister-in-law, Woody and Tina Peavy of Hudson; sister-in-law, Linda Peavy of Katy; and a multitude of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, as well as numerous cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, A.G. “Gip” Peavy and Dorothy (Woodworth) Peavy; brothers, Charles Evans Peavy and Clifford Bristol Peavy; and his best friend, Ron Kelley.
