Albert Russell Varsey was born in Cleveland, Ohio October 31, 1938, to Wilma Estell (Eustes) Varsey and Albert Russell Varsey. He died March 9, 2025, in a local nursing facility.
He lived in Cleveland until 1985 except for a 2-year stint in the Army where he was stationed in peacetime Germany. Upon his return to Cleveland, he worked as a welder and an owner of a custom drapery business. He got married and had 4 children. Later he moved to Houston to take classes at the Houston School of Art. He was a very good artist. He also liked woodwork as an outlet for his art as well as the usual mediums. At an adult singles group at First United Methodist Church in Pasadena, Texas he met his wife, Rosemary. After a year of dating, they married in 1989.
A job offer from Texas Foundries for his wife had them moving to Lufkin in late 1990. He did some freelance artwork for various advertising firms in the area. Eventually he had to give up art as his hand grew unable to hold the brushes.
Russ is survived by his wife, Rosemary Evans Varsey, his daughters, Pattie Vericello (California), Cheryl Aron (Ohio) and Anne Marie Varsey (Ohio), grandchildren, Melissa, Elizabeth, Mallori, and Jamie, and several great-grandchildren. He is also survived by Rosemary’s children, Allen (Ronda) Exnicious, and Rhonda Smith, and grandchildren, Robert Exnicious, Marisa Exnicious, Matthew (Kaylea) Smith and Andrew Smith.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his son, Albert Russell Varsey, his parents-in-law, Jack and June Evans, stepson, Ryan Exnicious and the mother of his children, Fran.
Graveside services for the family will be held at a later date.
