Funeral services for Roy Wesley Carnes, Sr., 81, of Lufkin, will be held Saturday, September 23, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Blackie Cranford officiating. Interment will follow in the Zavalla Cemetery. Mr. Carnes was born March 31, 1936 in Edinburg, Texas, the son of the late Elva Etta (Blalock) and Wes C. Carnes. He died Thursday, September 21, 2017 at his residence. Mr. Carnes had lived in Angelina County most of his life. He proudly served his country in the United States Army National Guard from 1954 until 1965, and was the rank of Staff Sergeant when discharged. Mr. Carnes was retired from the Texas Highway Department following 33 years of service. He was a member of Chestnut Drive Baptist Church. What a legacy you have left for us! How do we put into words what you have been to all of us? The best husband, Daddy, PawPaw, friend, and neighbor anyone could ask for. May we always honor you in our lives, as you have honored our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. You were always the one we could all count on. You were a man of your word. You taught us the value of God, family, relationships, and how to count on and help each other. Your wisdom, gratitude, attitude, humor, and prayers for all of us will be so missed. You have left us with countless precious memories. May we all keep something in our pockets and hearts to serve someone else, as you always have. Survivors include his wife of 20 years, Mae Carnes of Lufkin; son and daughter-in-law, Wesley, Jr., and Katrinka Carnes of Burke; daughter and son-in-law, Dellene and Jerry Nelson of Lufkin; son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Rhonda Carnes of Lufkin; a bucket-full of grandkids and great grandkids; sister, Joanna May of San Antonio; niece, Carolyn Hudson; nephew, Carl May; and many friends. Mr. Carnes was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Billie Jean Carnes; and brothers, Amon Minor and Mack Henry Carnes. Pallbearers will be Matt Carnes, Chad Carnes, Wes Carnes, Joseph Carnes, Caleb Nelson, and Noah Carnes. Memorial contributions may be made to the Zavalla Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 211, Zavalla, Texas 75980. The family will receive friends and loved ones at the funeral home from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon prior to the service.
