Bennie Earlene Raney

November 12, 1934 — August 15, 2017

Funeral services for Bennie Earlene Raney, 82, of Brazoria will be held Saturday, August 19, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel in Huntington with Brother Walter Sanders officiating. Interment will follow in the W.M. Berry Cemetery.

Mrs. Raney was born November 12, 1934 in Lufkin, Texas, and died Tuesday, August 15, 2017 at her residence in Brazoria. Mrs. Raney resided in Lufkin for 20 years and then spent 30 years in the Freeport area. She was a homemaker and was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.

Our mother was the oldest of 10 children born to Winfred and Thelma (Nerren) Berry. She was the glue that held the family together, taking in most of her brothers and sisters at one time or another, helping each other out with life. She learned to sew at age 7 which followed her throughout life, sewing for us and the public. She could also knit and crochet, and made so many quilts for the family. Her cooking was the best out of anyone we knew. She could make a meal for six stretch into a meal for 10 if someone happened to drop by at meal time. She was always prepared to feed anyone down on their luck, even sometimes when we were barely feeding ourselves, like during the Dow Strike in the 70’s. She loved to garden, always having plenty of vegetables to share with others, and putting up many jars of her famous vegetable soup and salsa that we all fought over. She loved her family more than anything. Her whole face lit up with every phone call or visit she received, especially the grandbabies. She left us surrounded by her family who also loved her deeply. She will be missed so much, and a huge void will be left behind.

Survivors include her daughters, Brenda Harlen and husband John of Brazoria and Cheryl McCombs and fiance’ Eddie Elizaitis of Huntington; 12 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; sister, Geraldine Hamlet and husband John of Clute; brother, Sam Berry and wife Sue of Lufkin; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Glynn Burton Raney; two children, Billy Hambrick and Deby Morris; sisters, Jane Hankins, Sallie McCreary and Sue Wright; and brothers, W.M. Berry, Ralph Berry, Arthur Berry, and Mickey Berry.

Pallbearers will be Aaron Gartman II, Zach Barnes, Hunter Gartman, Shawn Perkins, Robert McCombs, and Eddie Elizaitis.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon prior to the services.
