Funeral services for Mary Ann McGuire Philmon, 81, of Lufkin will be held Saturday, July 15, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Chaplain John Bingham officiating. Interment will follow in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park.
Mrs. Philmon died Monday, July 10, 2017 following an extended battle with Parkinson’s Disease and its complications. She was born on June 13, 1936, in San Antonio, Texas. She enjoyed sewing, baking, reading, fishing and photography. Mrs. Philmon and her husband were members of Calvary Baptist Church of Lufkin for over 50 years. After completing her Bachelors Degree in Home Economics and Masters Degree in Education at Stephen F. Austin University, she taught Home Economics in the Hudson Independent School system for 22 years, from 1961-1984. She loved to cook and bake for family and friends. No family gathering was complete without her chocolate chip cookies or homemade pies. She was never happier than when her family was together and enjoying each other. Mary Ann loved to travel with her husband, William H. “Bill” Philmon, to see family in Colorado and Louisiana, as well as traveling extensively to scenic or historic places within the United States. They also traveled to many wonderful and fascinating places outside the country throughout their nearly 62 years of marriage.
Survivors include husband, William H. “Bill” Philmon of Lufkin; daughter, Carolyn Philmon Sunde and husband Ole of Tyler, Texas; daughter, Sharon Elaine Detter of Colorado Springs, Colorado; grandchildren, Jennifer Sunde Jones and husband David of Tyler, Texas, Jeff Gallaway and wife Tiffany of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Angela Michelle Sunde of Austin, Texas, and Carly Renee Detter of Colorado Springs, Colorado; sister, Kathy Moore of Whitehouse, Texas; brother, Tom McGuire of Colmesneil, Texas; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Glen and Helen Philmon of Metairie, Louisiana, Virginia Philmon and Ginny Massey of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Evelyn and Buddy Estes of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Jake and Patricia Philmon of Lake Charles, Louisiana; great-grandchildren, Faith and Grace Carlson, Noah and Tucker Gallaway, and Clyde Jones; and numerous nieces and nephews. Special Friends include her Hospitality Companions and Staff Caregivers of the PineCrest Community, as well as Dr. Richard Roby and the Staff of Hospice in the Pines.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Florence Birkner and Beverly H. McGuire, Jr.; and brothers, Beverly H. McGuire III and James Patrick McGuire.
Pallbearers will be Tim McGuire, Brian McGuire, David Jones, Ryan Stockwell, Chris Hotard, and Robert Ethridge.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to Hospice in the Pines, 1504 W. Frank Avenue, Lufkin, Texas 75904 or the American Parkinson Disease Association, East Texas Chapter, 700 Olympic Plaza Suite 904, Tyler, Texas 75701.
The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.
