Interment for Delma Lois (Carpenter) Mayette, 89, of Lufkin will take place at Wallace Chapel Cemetery in the Hudson Community on Sunday, July 9, 2017. She died peacefully Friday, July 7, 2017 at St. Catherine’s Center in Waco following a short illness.
Delma was the second child of six born to George and Lela Carpenter on Nov. 16, 1927 in Lufkin, Texas. She grew up in Hudson and resided in the Lufkin area the majority of her life. Delma retired from the United States Forestry Service in 1985, with the job taking her to Sitka, Alaska for the last two years. Her retirement was spent traveling the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Europe with her husband and also her three beloved sisters. She had a benevolent soul and enjoyed spending time with family, playing Scrabble, reading and solving crossword puzzles. Delma also spent time volunteering and was a longtime member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Lufkin.
Delma is preceded in death by her parents; husband, William Mayette; brothers, CW Carpenter and Joe Riley Carpenter; and sister and brother-in-law, Bobbie and Robert Cherry.
Delma is survived by her daughter, Kathryn Schmahl of Jacksonville, Florida; son, George Brookshire of Waco; daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Kenneth Hilliard of Martinsville; sister and brother-in-law, Billie and Bob Angel of Pearland; sister and brother-in-law, Mary and James Holcomb of Rusk; seven grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Delma to The American Macular Degeneration Foundation and the National Forest Foundation.
