Verdie Lee (Wise) Barnes

Funeral services for Verdie Lee (Wise) Barnes, 86, of Zavalla, will be held Saturday, July 8, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel in Huntington with Brother Alan Byrd and Brother Jackson Colwell officiating. Interment will follow in the Zavalla Cemetery.

Mrs. Barnes was born July 22, 1930, in San Augustine, Texas, the daughter of the late Emily (Sowell) and Herman E. Wise. She died Wednesday, July 5, 2017 in a Lufkin hospice facility.

Mrs. Barnes had resided in Zavalla most of her life. She had been a substitute teacher for the Zavalla I.S.D. She was also a homemaker and a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt. She enjoyed raising toy fox terriers, fishing, playing the harmonica, and crocheting. Mrs. Barnes was a member of Old Union Primitive Hardshell Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Emmie and Steve Kimbrell of El Paso; daughter-in-law, Charlotte Barnes of Zavalla; grandchildren and spouses, Cory and Becky Jackson of Anchorage, Alaska, Jim and Melissa Paxon of Zavalla, Heather and Jeffery Cooper of Pollok, and Trey Barnes of Zavalla; great grandchildren, Skyler Meyers, Kristin Jackson, Dalton Jackson, Reid Meyers, Saydee Jackson, Nicholas Paxon, James Paxon, Brayden Paxon, Cailyn Cooper, Olen Cooper, Anna Cooper, and Abigail Cooper; great-great grandson, Zayden Cloud; beloved niece, Renee Wise Gladden; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Herman Barnes; son, Bruce Barnes; and ten brothers and sisters.

Pallbearers will be Jim Paxon, James Paxon, Nicholas Paxon, Brayden Paxon, Jeffery Cooper, Thomas Garrard, Trey Barnes, and Steve Kimbrell.

The family extends a special thanks to Hospice in the Pines. They could not have been more kind or more caring.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of her son, Bruce Barnes, to the ALS Association, Texas Chapter, P.O. Box 271561, Houston, Texas 77277.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home in Huntington.
