Sybil (Mcgilberry) Self

Funeral services for Sybil (McGilberry) Self, 92, of Lufkin will be held Saturday, May 27, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Marvin Slusher and John Koch officiating. Interment will follow in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park. Mrs. Self was born March 4, 1925 in Zavalla, Texas to the late Stella (Jones) and Ross McGilberry, and died Wednesday, May 24, 2017 in a local hospice facility. Mrs. Self had resided in Lufkin since 1965. She was employed by the Texas Department of Public Safety in the Driver’s License Division. She loved her family dearly and she touched many people. She was a very strong Christian and truly had a servant’s heart. She loved to cook and fried pies were her specialty. Mrs. Self especially enjoyed traveling. She was a member of the Hometown Traveler’s Club and spent her 90th birthday sailing around the horn of South America. She enjoyed meeting and visiting with people. She was a member of the Eastern Star for 50 years and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. Survivors include her son, Dr. Roger Self and wife Terri of Lufkin; daughter, Billie Ross Byrum and husband Doug of Nacogdoches; grandchildren, Sharmion Bailey, Dr. Ryan Self, Riley W. Self, Bailee Bailey, Bianca Bailey, Samantha Byrum, Margaret E. Self, and Thomas W. Self; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Willie Self; granddaughter, Rachel Byrum Miller; and sister, Thelma Null. Pallbearers will be Dr. Bill Barrett, Dr. Ryan Self, Riley Self, Dr. John Patterson, Dr. Jeff Grubb, James Richard Self, and Anthony Hodge. Honorary pallbearers will be Lynn George and Marvin Slusher. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice in the Pines, 1504 W. Frank Avenue, Lufkin, Texas 75904 or Calvary Baptist Church, P.O. Box 571, Lufkin, Texas 75902. The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.
