Funeral services for Amos S. Lewis, 78, of Diboll will be held Friday, April 28, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Buster Grigg and Reverend Kenny Hibbs officiating. Interment will follow in the Ryan Chapel Cemetery. Mr. Lewis was born November 27, 1938 in Isney, Alabama to the late Annie L. (Muddy) and Tommy E. Lewis, and died Wednesday, April 26, 2017 in a local hospital. Mr. Lewis had resided in the Lufkin area for most of his life. He was a Police Officer for the City of Lufkin for 34 years and held a Master Peace Officer License. He started the “Are you OK” and the first FTO programs for the Lufkin Police Department. He was the former Director and Vice President of Lufkin Noon Kiwanis, former Treasurer of the Angelina County Peace Officers Association, the Founding Coordinator for the Lufkin Crime Stoppers and the Lufkin Citizens’ Police Academy, and also served as a former President for the Academy. Mr. Lewis was a veteran and served in the United States Army from 1957-1960 where he guided missiles. He played on the Diboll High School Baseball team and during his Senior year, 1957, he was selected the Most Valuable Player and All Zone. He was also inducted into The Diboll High School Hall of Fame. Mr. Lewis loved all sports, and even the Dallas Cowboys in their darkest hours. Mr. Lewis had a great sense of humor, which he never lost, even in his sickness. He was strong physically, mentally, and also in his beliefs. He had a multitude of friends, and he cherished his family and friends. He was an artist and enjoyed painting in oils and watercolors. He also enjoyed golf. Survivors include his wife, Janette Lewis of Diboll; daughter, Donda (Journey) Lewis; sons, Randy Lewis and wife Kathy, and Steve Lewis and wife Maria; stepson, Tom Chapman; grandchildren, Kaleigh Masters, Emilie Woodward, Caleb Kreatschman, Haven (Destiny) Lewis, Madison Kreatschman, Precious Kreatschman, Jace Lewis, Josh Lewis, Jessica Valladares and Ryan Lewis; many great-grandchildren; sisters, Doris Reed and Betty Pettit and husband Bill; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Tommy Ann Lewis; and brother, Lamar Lewis. Pallbearers will be Alton Lenderman, David Kirkland, Keith Davis, Tom Dunn, James Nowak, and David Walker. Honorary pallbearers will be The Lufkin Police Department Officers. The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home.
