Funeral services for Wanda Sammon Massey, 70, of Zavalla, will be held Wednesday, March 22, 2017, at 3:00 p.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel in Huntington with Brother Bill Massey officiating. Interment will follow in the Zavalla Cemetery.
Mrs. Massey was born December 18, 1946 in Mineola, Texas, the daughter of the late Helen (Colwell) and Wiley E. Sammon. She died Saturday, March 18, 2017, in a Lufkin hospital.
Mrs. Massey had resided in Zavalla most of her life. She had been employed as a cook with the Zavalla ISD for 25 years. She loved her work at the school, and adored all of her “children” there. One of her favorite events was Halloween, as she looked forward to showering all the kids in Zavalla with candy; but any holiday surrounded by her family was always a favorite. Mrs. Massey was a member of First Baptist Church Zavalla.
Mrs. Massey was always the “glue” in the family, keeping it all together and putting the needs of everyone else before her own. She will be remembered as being a great cook, a compassionate woman, a loving mother and grandmother, and a devoted wife. She will be greatly missed by all who had the blessing of knowing her.
Survivors include her husband of 48 years, Carrol Massey of Zavalla; sons and their wives, Steven and Stephanie Massey of Huntington, Randal and Shannon Massey of Zavalla; five grandchildren, Cody Massey, Madison Massey, Brandon Getro, Aaliyah Gonzalez, and Adrian Gonzalez; brother, Dennis Sammon of Baytown; brothers-in-law and their wives, Kenneth and Rose Massey, David and Wonda Massey, Bill and Marcia Massey; sister-in-law and husband, Sandra and Robert Lockhart; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Don Ellis Sammon; and sister-in-law, Teresa Sammon.
Pallbearers will be Phillip Morrell, Waylon Boyles, Jason Sammon, D.J. Sammon, Ken Massey, Clay Massey, and Adrian Gonzalez.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 212 Gene Samford Dr., Lufkin, Texas 75904, or to the Zavalla Elementary School Library, 431 E. Main St., Zavalla, Texas 75980.
The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home in Huntington.
