Lisa was reunited with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, family and loved ones on March 2, 2017. Lisa was born August 6, 1960 in Port Arthur, Texas to Eva Beatrice Medlin and Will Rogers Medlin.
Lisa had three true loves in her life: God, her adored friends and family, and her boys, Fred, Will, and David. Lisa’s faith was never in doubt as she served St. Cyprian’s Episcopal Church as a lay reader on countless Sundays at the 7:30 a.m. service. She devoted her time to advancing the church in any way possible and serving her Lord and Savior to the best of her ability. Loving friends surrounded Lisa throughout her life. She cherished each friendship differently because she believed that each friend was unique, that God ordained their friendship, and the two would forever impact the other in a way that only they would fully understand. Lisa was devoted to her family in a way that most strive to duplicate. She cared for them unconditionally and dropped everything to be there for them whenever required. Nevertheless, Lisa loved nothing more in life than her husband, Fred, and two sons, Will and David. Her marriage stood the test of time, grew stronger by the day, and matured with love at every obstacle. Lisa’s children were, and will forever be, her most cherished possessions. She beamed with pride at their progress throughout life while instilling in them the passion, dedication, enthusiasm, and love by which she lived her life.
Lisa graduated from Longview High School in 1978 and went on to attend Kilgore College where she was a proud member of the 39th line of the world-famous Kilgore College Rangerettes. She would go on to serve as a Board Member of the Kilgore Rangerettes years later. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism from the University of North Texas, while minoring in Political Science. Along with her degree, Lisa also earned five different teaching certificates throughout the years. Lisa was a passionate teacher at Lufkin High School and the beloved Director of the Panther Pride Drill Team for 10 years. Lisa helped shape the lives of innumerable young women during her time as Panther Pride Director and continued her “pride” by training each individual who sought her out for their future dancing endeavors. With dancing still on her mind, Lisa accepted the job as Angelina College cheerleader sponsor and continued to teach and provide students with her knowledge of dance. Quick to share her talents, Lisa choreographed countless high school musicals and community performances through the years. Later in life, Lisa worked at the Lufkin/Angelina County Chamber of Commerce where she helped forever improve and enhance her adopted home. She served as President of the Junior League of Lufkin from 2003-2004, was named by her peers as Volunteer of the Year in 2002, and selected as the League’s Sustainer of the Year in 2011. Lisa was also a former President of Hospice in the Pines, served as President of the Lufkin Middle School Parent-Teacher-Student Organization and furthered the mission of the Museum of East Texas. An avid exerciser, Lisa started her mornings working out. Her step aerobics classes were legendary. Her “Steppers” were devoted to her as instructor and friend. They all agreed “she was the glue that held them all together no matter what life sent their way.”
Lisa is survived by her husband of 30 years, Dr. Fred D. Griffin of Lufkin; sons, William Stanger Griffin of Lufkin, and David Pruitt Griffin of Lufkin; her father, Will Rogers Medlin of Lufkin; mother-in-law, Zuleika Griffin of Lufkin; sister and brother-in-law, Tammy and Ronnie Schneider of Willis; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Margaret and Bob Baze of Houston; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and infinite friends.
She is preceded in death by her mother, Beatrice Medlin; and father-in-law, Fred D. Griffin, Sr.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Lisa Griffin Memorial Scholarship at the Lufkin High School Alumni Association, P.O. Box 150837, Lufkin, Texas, 75915 or the St. Cyprian’s Episcopal Church at 919 S. John Redditt Drive, Lufkin, Texas, 75904.
