Memorial services for Ellen (Griest) Arentson, 96, of Lufkin will be held Thursday, February 23, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. in the PineCrest Retirement Community Chapel with Dr. Brian Wiggins officiating. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Carroway Funeral Home.
Mrs. Arentson was born October 31,1920 in Cincinnati, Ohio to the late Myrtle (Dixon) and Walter H. Griest, and died Saturday, February 18, 2017 in Lufkin.
Mrs. Arentson was the first born of a pair of twins. She enjoyed being a “Halloween baby”. During World War II she was a writer and proofreader of technical manuals for the aviation industry. At heart, she was both a philosopher with a probing mind and a sensitive poet who could put feelings into words. In 1942 she married Richard “Dick” Arentson. Together they were volunteers in church and community, helping with various hospice services, libraries, and organizations reaching out to people in need. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include her children, Ken Arentson and wife Sue of Des Moines, Iowa, and Jane Peacock and husband Alan of Tampa, Florida; as well as grandchildren and the many family members and friends she held close to her heart.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and daughter, Carol.
Mrs. Arentson benefited greatly from the good and loving care of the PineCrest Retirement Community, where she lived for 22 years, and most recently the Hospice in the Pines. The family is deeply grateful to all who cared for her in so many ways.
