Funeral services for Ken Powell Murphy, 80, of Hudson will be held Thursday, February 16, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Keith Heftved and Darrell Rains officiating. Graveside services with military honors will follow in the Largent Cemetery. Mr. Murphy was born June 1, 1936 in Lufkin, Texas to the late Alice (Brasuell) and Chester Murphy. He died Sunday, February 12, 2017 at his home in Hudson. After a three year stint in the U.S. Army in Lumberton, New Jersey, where he received a commendation for saving the life of a badly burned man, Mr. Murphy returned to Lufkin and married Lois Conditt, his wife of 57 years. Mr. Murphy was employed by the paper mill in Evadale, Texas for nine years before returning to the Lufkin mill. He retired from Champion after 30 years as a millwright and roll grinder. In retirement, Mr. Murphy found great joy in helping others. He especially loved creating memorable and exciting scenes for the youngsters in Vacation Bible School at Lancewood Baptist Church. His workshop was his sanctuary, a place of peace and quiet where he could communicate with God. Mr. Murphy leaves behind a loving family, each having special memories of family vacations and camping trips. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Lois Murphy; daughters and sons-in-law, Sheryl and Charlie Liles of Pollok, Lisa and Terry Wise of Brookeland, Vickie Murphy and fiancé Keith Heftved of Bigfork, Montana, and Sabrina and Kirby Collins of Lufkin; grandchildren, Devan Wise and wife Crystal, Dylan Wise, Kaylyn Collins, Sydney Collins, Addie Liles, Jennifer Liles, and Leesa Liles; great-grandson, Silas Easthagon; sisters, Bettie Wright of Katy, Sally Threlkeld of Washington, and Jeanette Rodrigues of Lufkin; and a number of nieces, nephews, and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Kathy RayLynne Earley; and sister, Jonie Lawrence. Pallbearers will be Charlie Liles, Terry Wise, Kirby Collins, Devan Wise, Dylan Wise, and Darrell Rains. Honorary pallbearers will be David Arnold, Gary Stephenson and Jimmy Lawrence. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Youth of Lancewood Baptist Church, P.O. Box 155938, Lufkin, Texas 75915. The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home.
