Murlene Young Davis

Funeral services for Murlene Young Davis, 91, of Lufkin, will be held Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel in Lufkin with Brother Jerry Browning and Dr. Mark Livingston officiating. Interment will follow in Mount Zion Cemetery in Apple Springs. Mrs. Davis was born July 29, 1925 in the Helmic Community of Trinity County, Texas to the late Allie Vashti (Warren) and John Wilmer Young. She passed away peacefully from this life to spend eternity with her Lord and Savior on Friday, January 20, 2017. Mrs. Davis grew up in Trinity County. At age 17, she moved to Houston and worked at Hughes Tools until she married Burnis Davis on December 22, 1945. She had four daughters and spent many hours sewing for them. She also enjoyed fishing, and cooking and baking. She was famous for her coconut cake and oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. She enjoyed spending time with her family. Her greatest joy in life was nurturing and loving her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She worked at the U.S. Post Office, where she retired after 24 years. In 1991, Mrs. Davis moved to Lufkin where she remained until her death. She was a member of Keltys Baptist Church. She volunteered at the Salvation Army, was a member of the Quilters Guild, and was a champion 42 player. She is survived by three daughters, Carrie Reynolds and husband Thomas of Friendswood, Donna Ellis and husband George of Groveton, and Neda Barlow and husband Al of New Braunfels; grandchildren, Cheryl Bricker, Brett Reynolds, Kelly Huffhines, Courtney Burkhart, and Christina Ashley; great grandchildren, Ashley Huffhines, Austin Bricker, Kyrsten Oliver, Ty Burkhart, Thomas Ashley, and Samuel Ashley; great-great granddaughter, Shaylynn Bailey; sisters, Marie McFarland, Cora Hines, and VJ Kinley; brother, Norris young and his wife Rosie; as well as many nieces, nephews and other relatives. Mrs. Davis was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Burnis Davis; daughter, Sharron Carriker; great granddaughter, Kayla Huffhines; sisters, Opal Stanley, Lora Belle Overstreet, and Gladys Collins; and many friends. Pallbearers will be Billy Mac Collins, Keith Collins, Kenneth McFarland, Bobbie Hines, Roy Lynn Young, and Bruce Lumbley. Honorary pallbearers will be Curtis McFarland, Larry McFarland, Mike Hines, and Terry Hines. The family extends a thank you to Dr. Pablo Splenser, Affinity Hospice, and special care giver, Janet Patrick. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home.
