Mr. Armstrong was born March 15, 1932 in Galveston, Texas to the late Viola (Reynolds) and Lloyd Thomas Armstrong, and died Tuesday, November 1, 2016 in a Houston hospital.
Glenn “Jake” Armstrong had many unique things happen to him in his life such as serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, and working on a Red Cross truck helping with the Texas City Disaster. Jake Armstrong first came to Lufkin, September 5, 1955 where he went to work for KTRE as their “general flunkie”, cameraman, and program director for 12 1 /2 years. On August 9, 1957 he married the love of his life, Lillian Franklin. On November 5, 1965, they opened HOP&S which is still open today. Through the years with his entrepreneurship attitude he did many things such as selling sound equipment, operating a print shop, and opening the hide-out, which was the first pizza place in Lufkin. He photographed many wrecks for the highway patrol and did weddings as well. He also enjoyed being an auctioneer of his own auction house. Additionally, he sold antiques and gifts. Some may remember his flair for the unique by opening a shop called “The ID”. He also started a trade day which was located on the Neches River past Diboll, heading south. Jake and Lillian were charter members of Trinity Baptist Church. In his later years, constrained by health, he was known to have sent many e-mails that inspired others. He was the mentor of many. He has gone to be with the Lord and will be missed by all.
