Deason Moore

December 3, 1922 — September 15, 2016

Deason Moore, 93, of Buna, Texas, was born December 3, 1922 in Garrison, Texas, and passed away on September 15, 2016 in Lufkin, Texas. Friends are invited to attend a memorial visitation at First Baptist Church of Buna on Thursday, September 22, 2016 from 4 to 6 p.m. A graveside service will be held at Walnut Grove Cemetery in Garrison, Texas on Saturday, September 24, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. with Jerry Clark officiating.

Deason Moore was the youngest of seven children of Harrison Cul and Mary Doke Wilson Moore. After graduating from Garrison High School, he served in the U.S. Navy Seabees during WWII. He was part of the landing force on D-Day at Normandy in France, served as part of the landing force in Okinawa and participated in the occupation of Japan. After WWII, he returned home and earned degrees from Sam Houston State Teachers College and Stephen F. Austin State College. On March 7, 1947, he married Marian Newman of Garrison, and she became his partner for life for 69 years; they added a daughter, Dianne, in 1950 and a son, Deas, in 1953 to their family. He taught in the Veterans’ program for 4 years after college, moved to Buna, Texas, where he taught Agriculture for Buna I.S.D. for 16 years and finished his career serving as the Elementary School Principal in Buna for 17 years. Two of his pleasures were teaching Ag and being involved in the FFA program. He enjoyed helping his students with fairs, livestock shows, contests, calf scrambles, and service projects. He was very proud of his students and their accomplishments; his scrapbooks contain many photos of them and their families. He was honored to have one of his students, Jerry Clark, serve as the State FFA President. Jerry has remained a special friend. As principal, he liked working with teachers and students. During retirement, he enjoyed doing things with his family and friends, working in his garden and his mayhaw/berry orchard, reading, building things, hunting on his farm and “little place” in Garrison, fishing, going to the feed store, attending First Baptist Church of Buna and living in Buna for 63 years.

His family includes his wife, Marian; his daughter, Dianne Croom and her husband Doug of Lufkin; his son, Deas Moore and his wife Ginger of Beaumont; grandson, Michael Croom of Houston; granddaughter, Marsha Croom Mitchell and husband Gabe of Katy; granddaughter, Laura Moore Whipps and husband Bart of Beaumont; granddaughter, Mary Moore Harris and husband Anthony; great-grandsons, Jackson Deason Mitchell and Jameson David Mitchell of Katy; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mildred and Al Stoddard of Hemphill; sister-in-law, Martha Nell Newman of Shreveport; and many special nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his three brothers, his three sisters and a granddaughter.
