Clarkie Mae "Granny" Brown

Funeral services for Clarkie Mae “Granny” Brown, 87, of Lufkin will be held Friday, August 5, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at First Christian Church Lufkin with Pastor Stephen Lantis officiating. Interment will follow in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park.

Mrs. Brown was born September 11, 1928 in Angelina County, Texas to the late Ora Dell (Anderson) Milligan and Clarence M. Milligan, and died Wednesday, August 3, 2016 in a local nursing home.

Mrs. Brown had resided in Lufkin her entire life. She was a graduate of Lufkin High School as well as a 1946 graduate of Josephine Hodge Beauty School in Houston, Texas. She started her early years as a beauty operator working with other operators and was eventually successful in opening her own beauty shop at her home. Mrs. Brown worked tirelessly with many customers until 2014 when she finally decided to put her scissors and combs up and retire. She was active in various bowling leagues in Lufkin, active in the Order of the Eastern Star Lufkin Chapter 283, the Altrusa Club, as well as an ardent supporter of Lufkin High School Panther football, rarely missing a Friday night home game at Panther Stadium. Mrs. Brown was an active member of First Christian Church Lufkin as well as an active member of the church choir for many years. Clarkie was known for her pies, chicken and dumplings, and her bean suppers. She supplied many a meal at First Christian Church Wednesday night fellowships. She was a participant for many years in the annual Hushpuppy Olympics and was successful in winning the championship one year. She loved her flower beds and tended them with a definite green thumb.

Survivors include her daughter, Barbara Ann McGaughey and husband David of Lafayette, Louisiana; daughter, Mary Frances Brown Holland of Lufkin; grandchildren, Dana Belmore of Anchorage, Alaska, Angie Robinson of Cedar Park, Wayne Brown of Lufkin, Missy Brown of Lufkin, Derrick Holland of Lubbock, Ashley Holland of Lufkin, and Dylan Holland of Lufkin; 10 great-grandchildren; brother, William Roy of Houston; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 68 years, Wayne Edgar Brown; son, Danny Lee Brown; granddaughter, Christy Rochelle Brown; and brothers, Oscar “Sonny” Milligan and Jerry Milligan.

Pallbearers will be Wayne Brown, Steve Milligan, David McGaughey, Jim Riggs, and John Porter.

Honorary pallbearer will be Bob Brown.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday evening at Carroway Funeral Home.
