Graveside services for Nina Nelson, 77, of Lufkin will be held Thursday, May 19, 2016 at 11a.m. in the Gann Cemetery with Dr. John Green officiating.
Mrs. Nelson was born on July 31, 1938 in Chester, Texas to the late Carl Riley and Dorothy Schaefer Riley and died Monday May 16, 2016 in Nacogdoches.
Nina, formally of Diboll, had resided in Lufkin since 1982. She was employed by Memorial Hospital (CHI St. Luke’s) for many years and retired in 1997. Nina graduated as the salutatorian of her class at Chester High School, then attended Pineywoods Business College. She was known for her deer hunting skills using a pump .270. Nina was a very loving mother and grandmother who greatly enjoyed traveling with friends and taking family cruises. She took great joy in cooking for family and enjoyed dancing. She was a member of Harmony Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Susie and Terry Tolbert of Nacogdoches; son and daughter-in-law, Perry and Melissa Beaty of Lufkin; granddaughters, Claire Beaty of Austin and Keisha Tolbert of McKinney; grandson, Brandall Tolbert of Douglass; grandson, Tyson Hines and wife Lindsey of Lufkin; granddaughter, Kendall Slocum and husband Marc of Lufkin; great-grandson, Kaden Slocum of Lufkin; great-granddaughter, Chandler Hines of Lufkin; sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Gene Doiron of Pasadena; nieces, Carla Dickens of Pollok and Darla Hendrickson of Lufkin; nephew, Patrick Dickens of Woodville; numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives; she had a closeness and very special bond with Melinda Kartye of Lufkin and Ramona Garcia of Diboll.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jimmy “Shorty” Nelson; brother, Carlton Riley; nephew Wesley Doiron.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Thursday morning at the funeral home preceding the procession to the cemetery.
