Funeral services for Harvey “Ray” Smith, 83, of Lufkin will be held Saturday, March 5, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Alvin Vanderleest and Brother Maynard Phillips officiating. Graveside service with military honors will follow in the Whitehouse Cemetery. Mr. Smith was born August 25, 1932 in Castor, Louisiana to the late Harvey Augustus and Ruby Elizabeth Blake Smith and died Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at Southland Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. Mr. Smith, formerly of Louisiana and Tyler, Texas, resided in Lufkin since 1972. He served his country in the Korean War with the United States Army. He recently worked for Lufkin Independent School District as a Substitute Teacher for 6 years. Mr. Smith was also employed as a mail carrier, insurance salesman, and at one time owned a foreign car repair business. He loved to fish and enjoyed time with his dog “Buddy”. He was a good and loving father, husband, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Family was most important to him; he always looked forward to family get-togethers and the holidays. Just within the last year he learned to play the guitar and spent a lot of his time playing and singing. Mr. Smith was a member of First Assembly Lufkin. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Willie Ann Smith of Lufkin; son, Randy Smith of Lufkin and his children, Malisa, Brandon, and Brian; daughter and son-in-law, Wendy and Steve Solly of Lufkin and their children, Kimberly and Jessica; son and daughter-in-law, Ricky and Kathleen Smith of Camas, Washington and their children, Justin, Roy, Trenda, and Kenzie; daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Billy Ellis of College Station and their children, Jonathon, Nathan, and Meghan; son and daughter-in-law, Ronny and Dee Smith of Lufkin and their children, Rae Lynn, Kristy, Chloe, and Leslie; 23 great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, and 2 granddaughters. Pallbearers will be Brandon Smith, Brian Smith, Jonathon Ellis, Wesley Mooreland, Roy Smith, and Will Haun. Honorary pallbearer will be Nathan Ellis and Justin Tobias. The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.
