Funeral services for Homer Earl Powell, 55, of Lufkin will be held Monday, February 15, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Bryan Lipscomb officiating. Interment will follow in the Largent Cemetery. Mr. Powell was born October 12, 1960 in Houston, Texas, and died Wednesday, February 10, 2016 in a Houston hospital. Formerly of Groveton, he had resided in Lufkin for 20 years. He was an avid Texas Longhorns fan, loved music, and was an ardent Republican. He was also known as an excellent cook and was an accomplished video gamer. Mr. Powell was beloved by hundreds of friends all over the U.S. and worldwide. Homer was known for his great humor, generosity to friends and family, and his love of dogs - particularly his best companion, Lovey. Mr. Powell was a member of Providence Baptist Church. Survivors include his parents, Victor Earl and Nina (Jones) Powell of Lufkin; sister and brother-in-law, Vicki and Ron Garfield of Manhattan Beach, California; nephews, Tyler Garfield of Manhattan Beach, California and Jared Garfield and wife Jamie of Cumming, Georgia; great-niece and great-nephew, Alexis Garfield and Camden Garfield, both of Cumming, Georgia; and Lovey, his rat terrier. Pallbearers will be Ron Garfield, Jared Garfield, Tyler Garfield, Steve Casper, John Raiford, Raymond Smith, Nathan Smith and Mitch Howell. Memorial contributions may be made to the Providence Baptist Church Building Fund, 4423 Ted Trout Drive, Lufkin, Texas 75904. The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home.
