C.A. "Smitty" Smith

October 24, 1926 — February 8, 2016

Funeral services for C.A. (Smitty) Smith, 89, of Lufkin will be held Thursday, February 11, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Stephen Lantis officiating. Interment will follow in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park. Mr. Smith was born October 24, 1926 in Polk County, Texas to the late John W. and Maude (Sellers) Smith and died Monday, February 8, 2016 at the Southland Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. Mr. Smith resided in Lufkin for most of his life. He served his country in World War II with the United States Navy. He retired from Champion International Paper as a Waste Water Supervisor after 45 years. He was a longtime member of the Paper Workers Union #1401. After retirement, Mr. Smith volunteered at Hospice in the Pines and then volunteered 16 years for C.I.S.C. He was a member of First Christian Church and the Friendship Group Sunday School Class. Survivors include his daughter, Carol Smith of Lufkin; son, Steve Smith of Lufkin; grandson, Wesley Bryant of New Orleans, Louisiana; sisters, Joyce DuBose of Nederland and Rita Beth Johnson of Lufkin; numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Billie Jean (Colburn) Smith; and brother, Glenn Smith. Pallbearers will be Scott Gilmore, Gary Colburn, Wayne Philpott, Randy DuBose, Dale Copeland, Thurman Jones, Bill Stroud, and Claude Welch. Honorary pallbearers will be his C.I.S.C. family. The family would like to extend special thanks to Dr.Karnati and his staff as well as the staff members at Southland Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. Memorial contributions may be made to First Christian Church, 1300 South First Street, Lufkin, Texas 75901or the Christian Information Service Center (C.I.S.C.) 501 South Angelina Street, Lufkin, Texas 75904. The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home.
